Nasal Aire II Cannula Mod Ideas

Post by Babette » Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:56 am

Good Morning!

The last few days I've been pondering a possible mod to the Nasal Aire II Cannula.

So far, in my experience, the hoses last forever. None have "hardened" on me, and I don't have a pet who chews them. Knock on wood.

But the cannulas soften up over time, and begin leaking. My little pea brain has been contemplating ways to make a softened cannula keep working a little longer.

One idea I've had is to find a hard plastic tube that is just slightly smaller than the diameter of the nose prong. Cut off a little ring of it, and polish all edges smooth. Using some sort of lube - probably Ayr Gel or something non-petroleum - shove the ring inside the nose prong, positioning it at a point about 3/4 of the way from the top.

This is based on the idea that if I stiffened up the lower edge, it would seal better, while still allowing for sufficient give to shove it in my nostril.

I've also contemplated some sort of OUTER RING that would attach outside the cannula, and seal the outside of the nare, sort of like a nasal pillow. Mack's silicone ear plugs come to mind, but they would have to be renewed regularly.

Anyone else thought about this concept? Jerry, you're the guy with the power tools and the skills to do this....

Cheers,
Barbara

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

have you ever tried the Nasal aire one? It's much stiffer. the cannula part can't cost much

Babs, yes it can be done especially in the MANLY sizes!! But would it not need to be at the end where the little bulb is? I have some felt polishing wheels that would polish it but my main concern would be if it would stay in place without some sort of toxic glue. The canullas are made out of a very slipery material.

She most likely has the corner of the market on Medium Plus size. It used to be her size before she went to a Large. If she does not have one let me know I might. I can't remember without going and looking whether it is a MP or a Large.

What about the possiblity of a dislodge and it shooting into the nostril? Of course it probably wouldn't get lost but???

Hey, I wrote you back!!!!

My work server is blocking cpaptalk emails, so if I don't log in here and check PM's manually, I don't realize I've gotten a PM.

Write me offlist - those of you that have the addy.

Anyway, what about sticking one of these in the cannula?
http://www.nosnorezone.com/nozovent-nas ... elief.html

Slide it into the barrel, and then wiggle one end up one prong, and the other up the other prong.

Velly intellesting......

I haven't tried the Nasal Aire I yet - they don't sell the cannulas alone, you have to buy the whole mask, and it only comes in one size per mask! Icky... I'd LOVE to try it, but so far haven't bitten. If they'd sell it like the they do the NAII, with all sizes in one kit, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Anyone seen anything like that for sale anywhere?

SD, I haven't had a chance to get to my box of spare parts. I swear I'll do it tonight. I've had something going on every night after work lately.

Cheers,
Babs

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Hey SD, found two MP's and they are going in the mail to you today at lunch time.

So, what do you guys think of this Nozovent idea?

Cheers,
B.

Good lord, what am I missing???? Seems reasonable to me to put that little thing inside the cannula, and it would increase the prongs spread to the outer edges.

Okay, spell it out, clearly I'm missing something.....

LOL,
B.

Oh well, gee, I guess we know YOU'RE sleep deprived!!!

No no, inside the cannula. Heck, it's cheap enough, can't hurt to try it.

I also have a destroyed Medium cannula that I COULD cut the prongs off, and attempt to shove them inside the prongs of a Large, and see if that stiffens them up any. I didn't destroy it - another user did.

LOL,
B.
