Are you breathing freely through your nostrils now? Can you smell food?

One at a time, put a pinch of salt and sugar, and a couple drops of lemon on your tongue. Can you taste that?

I can tell if something is sweet, tangy, etc. but that is about it. I can smell vinegar in the bottle, but can't taste it on food. I can smell ketchup, mustard, etc. in their bottle, but just can't taste them...wondering if this is normal...getting concerned.

As sense of smell slowly returns over the next few weeks, your taste will also improve.

In my experience that is what happened.

No worries yet! Give it more time to heal.

I was told to expect a 4-6 week healing window.

My reality was more like 8-12 weeks...

Sherry,

Yep. Give it some more time to heal. Loss of the sense of smell is not a common problem with turbinate resectioning.

How was your surgery and healing otherwise?

It was one of the best things I ever had done.

thanks for reassurance...It will have been 3 weeks on Thursday that I had this surgery...This is my 3rd sinus operation. The first 2 where deviated nasal septums and I got my sense of taste back in about 5 days, so for this to drag out almost 3 weeks is a little bit disturbing...but since you say it may take longer, I'll relax..I see the doc on June 16...I will say, I can breathe much better now and certainly am sleeping sounder at night so at least that aspect has turned out positive. The turbinates were not removed during the first 2 surgeries, so maybe that is what is causing the loss of taste.

To all that had this surgery, I am breathing much better, not perfect yet as my sinuses internally are still swollen and tender..but at last I can sleep w/o waking up more than once or twice during the night, whereas before, I was awake every 30 minutes due to no air coming through my sinuses. Doc said he had to be very aggressive as the cartilage had grown back AGAIN..it has a memory and keeps growing back..and then the turbinates were so swollen he says they were "out of control" and he had to trim them too. Recovery with splints up my nose for 5 days was not fun but I had some good "nose pack anxiety" narcotics to keep me calm.

still waiting to be able to taste again, will keep everybody posted.

OK, that's logical that your sense of smell and taste would still be impaired.

If you want to lose some weight, maybe this is a good time since food doesn't taste yummy now.

3 weeks after septoplasty with turbinate reduction and still cannot not taste anything, or not much. Some days I can taste orange juice or pineapple, and other days can't taste a darn thing...getting tired of this...anybody out there have to wait 6 weeks for taste to return? I am told to be patient, but patience is not exactly one of my virtues.

Anybody out there NEVER get their taste ability back after this surgery?

Two days ago you said your sinuses are still swollen and we told you the taste ability might be impaired until the swelling goes away and healing is complete. Are you wanting to get distressed about this? Try hard enough in cyberland and you can eventually find someone who has experienced any bad thing that can happen.

If you are "successful" in finding someone who did not get their taste ability back, it still doesn't mean it will happen to you.

I saw my surgeon yesterday and he was a bit surprised that after a month of healing from the septoplasty with turbinate reduction that I taste almost nothing...I see him in a month and he said if I still can't taste he is ordering an MRI of my brain. Not what I wanted to hear, but I am encouraged by some of the posts in response to mine telling me to just hang in there. I do have a good sense of smell which is a plus. Strangely I can taste a banana but not something strong like barbecue sauce or vinegar. Go figure. Oh well...I will keep you guys posted and thanks again for the assurances and encouragement.

As for breathing better, I am definitely breathing much better and am not waking up all night long. I am still plugged up and stuffy in the night and when I get up in the morning, but compared to no air intake up my nose before surgery, this is a huge improvement and I am glad I had the procedure done. Doc says I am still swollen up in my sinus cavity and it is still very tender but is healing nicely.

Will keep you all posted.

Taste buds only detect sweet, sour, salty, and bitter sensations. That's it And there are separate taste buds in distinct locations for each.

Everything else perceived as taste is actually detected via smell.

You may still need more time for your nose to heal.

The smell cells in the front of my nose don't work very well (chronic sinusitis) but these cells in the back of the throat where scent wafts upwards work very well, so I sometimes have lots and sometimes very little ability to smell depending on how much congestion I have.

In your case, it might be that one or the other set hasn't recovered sufficiently yet.

Mine took a lot longer. I have septoplasty and turbinate reduction. I would give it a few month and nerves can take a year to heal so I wouldn't get worried yet.
