Good books on sleep

Post by Gerryk » Sun Mar 01, 2009 9:56 pm

How about listing some good books you would recommend to others on sleep problems or sleep apnea?
We can copy and post the titles and authors from the previous post into ours that way others will have one list.

The first book I read which is a great book and I recommend to others is

Sleep interrupted by Dr Steven Park.

You read the best one by far. Sound Sleep, Sound Mind by Krakow is also good.

Not much else I would recommend. Krakow and Park both have good web sites you may want to keep up with.

I have a vision that we will figure out an easy way to ensure that children develop wide, deep, healthy and attractive jaws and then obstructive sleep apnea becomes an obscure bit of history.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ycw4uaX ... re=related

Ditto! Krakow's book really helped me!

I am reading another good one right now but haven't finished it. I had some time at work yesterday so I read the first 100 pages. I won't say anything till I finish it but so far it looks like a great book especially for beginners. I read fast so it won"t be long.

In Defense of Sleep by William Dement (long, fascinating, not overly "science-y"; perhaps slightly outdated)

Take a Nap, Change your Life! by Dr. Sara Mednick (website here: http://www.saramednick.com/ )

OK, I haven't finished the book yet but what I have read is enough for me to recommend this one.

The Cleveland Clinis guide to sleep disorders by Nancy Foldvary-schaefer DO director spleep disorders center.
What I have read covers a little more in depth about the sleep study experience and how to read in laymans terms a polysmnogram what the test entails, different definitions and so much more. This book has a copy write of 09 so not many people have read it yet.
I would recomment this book and I haven't finished it yet.

As a side note, Dr. Foldvary-Schaefer is one of the best sleep physicians. This is worth a read!

Here is a very good book that explains it all. Even has a good section on dental devices. The person who wrote that section knows her stuff. I would suggest anyone to see here for the dental device

Sleep Apnea-The Phantom of the Night: Overcome Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Win Your Hidden Struggle to Breathe, Sleep, and Live (Paperback)
by T. Scott Johnson (Author), William A. Broughton (Contributor), Jerry Halberstadt (Foreword), William Dement (Foreword), Colin Sullivan (Foreword)

Any new books come out recently or any more to add to the list?
Maybe we should make a list of books for newbies and put it on the Wiki. Maybe I will take the book list and try and figure out how to post on the Wiki.

I second Sleep Apnea: The Phantom of the Night -- Overcome Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Win Your Hidden Struggle to Breathe, Sleep, and Live, by T. Scott Johnson, M.D. et al. It's not the most well-written book (IMHO), but it does contain lots of good information.

I found the chapter on sleep test results to be especially enlightening. Many libraries carry this book, and it can be ordered through inter-library loan. The edition I have was published in 2003 and is 364 pages. It's available at
http://www.amazon.com/Sleep-Apnea-Phant ... 937&sr=8-1 and elsewhere online if you wish to purchase.
