I had GERD too and didn't know it. My allergist diagnosed it. I was complaining about my chronic hoarseness that I INSISTED was caused by my horrible pollen allergies. He told me that the most common cause of chronic hoarseness was GERD, and that one didn't ever have to experience heartburn to have GERD. He had me go on an RX called Aciphex for 2wks. Said if hoarseness gone, that was the problem. I was skeptical, but it worked! It was GERD.
I am also convinced GERD and OSA are related... and NOT just as a causal relationship to obesity. I am not obese.. I work out daily. I don't understand why I have two disorders linked to obesity. Perhaps it is a propensity for weak or loose connective tissue?? I am double jointed (meaning I have really loose tendons/ligaments). wonder if that relates somehow.
Another example of "atypical" GERD: a friend of my Mom's was at work and hadn't returned to her desk from the lunch room. Mom went in to ck on her. She said she had some food stuck in her throat and couldn't clear it. My mom said she should go to hospital. Finally convinced her. They scoped her in the ER. She had GERD so bad and for so long that she had massive esophogeal ulcers, bleeding and inflammation (causing that weird sensation). She had to be on an nasogastric tube which fed her stomach for a MONTH to let the esophogus heal. She was shocked by this... she had NO GERD symptoms, is not a drinker or smoker.
Sooo... My advice would be to run this by your dr. Maybe it was an isolated incidence of regurgitation during an apnea. But always good to check this out as chronic, untreated GERD can lead to precancerous changes in the esophogus.
