6-foot-hose subdomain?
6-foot-hose subdomain?
I received a topic reply notification by email. The link did not have the usual http://www.cpaptalk.com domain; it was using a subdomain named 6-foot-hose-cpaptalk.com. I think it is the only topic reply notification I have ever had that used that subdomain.
When I clicked on the link, it asked me to login (by supplying my userid and password, which I declined to give). That made me a tad suspicious, but I am not sure how anyone other than cpaptalk.com people could have access to that subdomain.
Thoughts?

That's not a subdomain, that is a domain. Clue? No periods in the name except before the .com You were very right in not providing your information. You may also want to report this to the administrator of this board.LoQ wrote:I received a topic reply notification by email. You may also want to scan your machine for unusual activity. Something somewhere connected these two related but not related items, and created a bogus domain name from them. Could have come from your own machine via a malware mail server or something like that. I have this happen to me once in a while with my own domain lionlamb.us

Seems odd that they wanted your cpaptalk login ? now if it was your bank login I could understand what they might be up to, but a cpaptalk login.LoQ wrote:I received a topic reply notification by email. With such activity it pays to do the usual checks on your PCs - one very good thing to run is the 'Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (MMSRT)' (google it & download it from Microsoft's web site). This tool gets updated regularly & is designed to scan for & remove the worst of the virii doing the rounds (like confiker worm).
The tool doesn't replace an anti-virus / anti-spyware program but is insurance against anything getting through. If you have Windows auto-update activated (I am a bit leery about allowing it) but as part of its updating procedure, it runs the MMSRT program before doing updates.
AFAIKT Microsoft had no option but to develop and make available this tool as their net architecture is (& always was) so severely compromised in an Internet based world - their architecture was fine when they only ruled the office lan.

Actually it's not that odd that they would want your cpaptalk.com password. Most people have a number of sites that they visit that require you to sign in and most people use the same password on all the sites. I bet more then one person who is reading this has the same login and password on their Paypal account or their bank account.
A word to the wise: Make sure your passwords are different on those types of accounts!

It is very important to maintain your own 'levels' of login. Keep some levels for different financial institutes & never pass those logins out or sign in to anything other than those institutes. Lower levels can be used for the more mundane sites but I agree 100% never use the same login you use at a 'mundane' site (non banking or financial) as you do at the fin / banking sites, that is courting disaster.
I maintain multiple groups of incompatible passwords for this very purpose.
Confiker worm has to have been one of the worst recent attacks that keeps re-infecting computers. Confiker will load itself onto USB sticks & that is how I ended up with it traveling from our company computers (infected by confiker) to my home PCs. Spend part of a week end tracking down that the USB stick kept reinfecting at home & work.

Re: 6-foot-hose subdomain?
OP: do you mean this? http://6-foot-hose.cpaptalk.com/
That just appears to be another virtual for this cpaptalk.com website.
When I checked the website URL you typed in your original post: (6-foot-hose-cpaptalk.com) it does not exist, nor was it purchased -checked WHOIS for domains.
I think there could have been an error for this cpaptalk.com website somehow and they referenced the incorrect URL.
It is best to be suspicious anyway of anything you perceive to be unusual, given how much crime there is online.

Re: 6-foot-hose subdomain?
Yes. I screwed up the punctuation. I meant that it was a subdomain, not a different domain. Sorry about that. My mistake mislead you guys. It was not intentional.MaryC wrote:OP: do you mean this? http://6-foot-hose.cpaptalk.com/
