Must have been high AHI last night

Post by lanndi » Sat May 16, 2009 7:44 am

I feel very crappy this morning. Headache, lightheaded, and of course, tired. Now that I know so much about SA, I'm guessing my oxy level was pretty low last nite. I WANT MY CPAP NOW!

Lanndi, Sleep on your sides or tummy until you get your equipment. About 40% of patients have Positional Sleep Apnea in which case the severity of the apnea is much greater when sleeping on the back.

How do I prevent myself from moving to my back after I fall asleep?

Lanndi,

I wore a small soft backpack with an empty 20-ounce rigid water bottle that would not allow me to roll onto my back. You can probably think creatively of other ways to do it. Some place a tennis ball in the pocket of a pocket tee and put the shirt on backwards. Some pin a wiffle ball to the back of their PJ top. If I remember correctly, one lady put her three-foot pet alligator against her back side.

Good luck,

Rooster

Lanndi,
one lady put her three-foot pet alligator against her back side.
But the critter's daggumm swishing tail and clacking jaw kept her awake anyway.

Thanks, Rooster, I minimized my supine sleep last night, and I can definitely feel a difference. I piled up pillows behind me -- which allowed me to be halfway between supine and side, but at least not all the way on my back.

I haven't come up with a better solution with stuff I have in my house, so this will work for now.

If you decide to buy something, this comes highly recommended:

After my sleep study, I was also antsy to get my CPAP set-up. I finally received it last Wednesday. Like Rooster said, OSA is often much worse when one sleeps on the back. The problem is that that is the ONLY way I like to sleep! Any other position makes my arm and shoulder a bit sore. I have a water bed, so it's not so bad, but when I sleep on a standard mattress, it's a lot worse. Since getting my CPAP, I can finally sleep on my back all night. I rarely even move once I go to sleep. I can tell because one of my cats sleeps between my feet (on top of the bedspread), and he's still there in the morning! My partner says that I haven't snored one bit since I started using the machine. How much longer are you expecting to wait to get your Rx / equipment?

Probably another 2-3 weeks. My titration was on the 14th and they said it would be 10 days before the doc finalizes the results. I'm not sure if this faceless sleep doc or my allergist who sent me to sleep lab will prepare my script. I plan to go to a dme on Friday and check out the various machines so I can ask my doc to write an exact prescription.

cpap.com has all the manufacturer's descriptions of their machines. It is a good resource for learning.
