Switched from FF to Nasal Mask....Tips/Advice?

Post by klockemy » Fri May 15, 2009 2:55 pm

Hello all,

I had the Quattro FFM and could not, for the life of me get and keep a seal. I tried just about everything I read on here as well as all the recommendations of the DME. I called her back today and told her that this thing wasn't working for me so she agreed to let me exchange it. I tried on nasal pillows and didn't like the feeling of the headgear and the things being stuck up my nose. Also, I was afraid that the slightest tug at the hose would change the position of the pillow. I had also read that quality of recent pillows has been less than par. So I ened up choosing the nasal mask that is in my profile for fit and the fact that is fit my large schnozz quite well.

All that said, brings me to my question. Since I was kinda used to using the FFM (was on it for a week), is there anything I should know about nasal masks, in particular the one I got. Tips/tricks/etc? BTW, I got the chinstrap listed in my profile with it, just in case I try to mouth breath. (I generally snore thru my mouth) I am going to try to go without the chinstrap as long as I can, unless I notice a HUGE increase in my leak rate.

Thanks all!

Kevin

PS The DME was so cool that she gave me the new mask on exchange (no charge to insurance) and let me keep the Quattro as a spare.

Tons and tons of tips and tricks here.
Do a search on the mask you chose. I could not get that particular one to seal for me, but maybe it'll work for you.
I also have to tape my mouth shut to keep from mouth breathing, and there is a wealth of information on that as well, in the yellow light bulb above. The chipstrap doesn't work for everyone, either.
Let us know what problems you have when you try it. (There are other full face masks that are popular, if you find the nasal mask isn't the thing for you.)
Some people just put it on and go to sleep, and never have a problem. Not many, but some!
Wishing you the best,
Lee Lee

The tip I have is about writing style.

I mention it here because it is pretty common, maybe some don't know or realize when you refer the reader to equipment in "your profile" - then next week, next month, or next year when your equipment changes and you don't remember to change your profile for months but then do.

Do you realize what you wrote will NOT make any sense to future readers? Once you make a change to your profile - it changes in every post, past and present.

To me it is much clearer to write in text, in my post what equipment it is I am referring to. But hey, that's me. It's not any harder to do either.

fwiw - I went from FFM to nasal to pillows. I too, thought I would not care to have something sticking in my nose but would not trun back now. The DME cannot resell or reuse your old mask, so it is not uncommon that they allow you to keep it. I think we should ALL be "issued" NLT 2 masks, myself. Just testing, your military acronyms

It is much easier to seal when there is less sealing surface. Meaning a FFM is the hardest and nasal pillows the easiest. Also the higher the pressure the harder it becomes to seal.

Thanks for calling me out on my 'writing style'. I was aware that the equipment changes on all your posts when you change it, but I wasn't thinking. A result of mask leakage last night.

Makes sense on the surface area vs leakage.

I remember most of my military acronyms....depends on which branch and era.

Kevin......

I can highly recommend the Aeiomed (Aura) Headrest mask......I've used it for 2-years. Add Lansenoh Lanolin for the nares......and 2" Blue 3M Painter's Tape #2080 from Lowe's. I changed to the Aura based on what Rested Gal had to say about it. I couldn't be happier. My AHI is consistently below 1.0

Why did you start out with a FF mask? In your PSG and/or titration did they observe mouthbreathing or mouthleaking?
