Thanks to Rooster & Robertmarilyn

Post by mdbarthe » Mon May 11, 2009 7:51 am

I want to send out a big thanks to both Rooster and Robertmarilyn for their recent posts on the "Falcon Position". Rooster first brought it to the forum in early April, I believe. Robertmarilyn followed up last week with a link to the website.

I've had lower lumbar back surgery several years ago and previous issues due to a duty injury in the mid-1970s. Because of that, I haven't slept on my stomach for over 30 years. It was just too painful. I've been primarily a back sleeper which is a huge detriment to my XPAP therapy. There is no pressure that will keep my airway open while I'm in the supine position.

Despite sleeping pretty well for the past 2 years since I've been on XPAP, I've never been able to get my AHI down below 5.0. Most of the time it has run between 7.0-15.0 no matter how I gradually increased or decreased pressure or adjusted the EPR. I know the algorythm on my machine doesn't make the AHI count equivalent to most standards, but I had just lost that terrific feeling in the mornings that I originally had when I began my therapy.

After Rooster and Robertmarilyn posted about the Falcon position, I went to the link, read up on it and began using it. The first night was an adjustment getting used to it, but I didn't have the pain I was expecting. Each subsequent night since has been more comfortable and I am waking up in the same position as when I drifted off; without any pain.

The best part of this story is that my AHI (even with my Resmed S8 Autoset II) has been 0.1-2.5 each night. I've had no leak issues with my mask in the Falcon position and switching from a left-facing to a right-facing position during the night has become effortless. Best part of the story - I've been waking up feeling more rested in the mornings than I have in a long, long time. In addition, my SpO2 has not dipped below 90% once since I "assumed the position".

Thanks to you two for your great posts. I wanted to let you know it has made a world of diffference!! Keep up the good work!

Dan,

Here's a link to the post that mdbarthe is talking about.

mdbarthe,

Glad I could be helpful. I've scoured the archives for information and tidbits stick in my mind about all kinds of things I see, so when someone asks about something I saw while scouring, I like to forward the information. And congrats on the great results of changing positions

Hey MD,

Just now catching up with you. That is fantastic!

I also need to write up what the Falcon position has done for me - it is wonderful.

I am indebted to Dr. Eric Falcon and will soon do that write up and let him know.

Regards,
Rooster

Many thanks to Rooster for posting "The Falcon" in early May. I joined Dr Falcon's e-mail site at that time - have received several interesting e-mails from him. I too have had back surgery, and very carefully tried it the first time - lol, it didn't hurt. His Web site is also full of information.
