CPAP for travel

Post by WillSucceed » Thu May 07, 2009 8:15 pm

For those of you who travel with your CPAP, please give me your opinion regarding the smallest machine with integrated humidification. I currently use a PB420 and while it is small, I'd like to find something even smaller. I'm wondering about the Covidien Sandman and the Resmed S8 Elite II as they both look small and, both have a fully integrated humidifier.
All opinions welcomed!

I use and like the Zzz-pap. Small, quite, cheap, and works good.

Willllllllllll.... Good to see your smiling face.

I'd probably opt for the ResMed Elite II. I'd make sure it had " II " at the end of the name...they're said to be extremely quiet.

I have an Elite. I consider it quiet, as "cpap" machines go. The " II " series machines are supposed to be even quieter.

EPR as the exhalation relief feature ... if you want to use that.
(WillSucceed and Respironics' C-Flex feature didn't gee and haw well together.)

Single power cord. No adapter brick or extra cords. Easy to pack.

Previous night's data easily seen in the LCD. Data broken down into AHI, AI, HI, Leak.

Pretty nifty.

Ahhhhhh Rested Gal, nice to see your pretty face as well; thanks for the nice welcome!

I've chatted-up the local Medigas ladies and will be able to borrow an Elite II for a few nights of trial usage. I'm very curious to see if I like the EPR feature. God, and everyone else, knows that I hated Respironics CFLEX.

While I don't find my current machine (PB420E) to be loud, posted specifications from PB and Resmed show that the 420E runs at 26 decibels while the Elite II is at 24 decibels. Not a big difference but, quieter is better!

Still interested to take a look at the Sandman.

Hi Ozij!
"Morfed" eh? Thanks for the update Ozij; will be interesting to see just how much of a "morf" occurred.

Long time no see, WS... Image

No first-hand experience here with any of the latest travel-size machines. But I just noticed there's a product section on cpap.com called "Travel Sized Machines". There are user reviews there for each of those small PAP machines:

One of those travel-sized machines is the latest DeVilbiss AutoAdjust, that recently won a cpaptalk product challenge. Plenty of user reviews about that machine here:

Long time indeed Will ... you look to be doing very good by your avatar update.

My opinion(s), as you are aware, is not worth all that much but I tried the AEIOmed Everest travel CPAP a while back and was not all that impressed.

IMO, it was rather noisy and the HH reservoir was small and would run out of water before 8 hours (although this will vary from climate to climate and HH setting). On the good side it was very compact and had a battery pack option for napping in places without power. As stated above, DeVilbiss and Sandman machines have both been received well around here ... I'd like to take a crack at them sometime myself.

Good luck with your selection ... pretty hard to mess up with the available choices.

Hi SWS and Dreamstalker:
Thanks both of you for the input; I hope that you are both doing well! The avatar is from last summer -gave myself braces (which have just now come off) for my 50th birthday so I guess I should have a new pic taken for my avatar. Don't know why I waited 50 years for straight teeth... hmmmmmm.

I had a long chat with the tech. guy at Covidien today and learned that the Sandman Auto is, overall, no smaller than the 420E (with humidifier platform attached) and, the algorithm (sp?) in the Sandman is no different than that of the 420E. The improvement seems to be that they have gotten rid of the sensor line that is inside of the 420E hose. I think this is a good idea as the sensor line attachment point on my first 420E snapped off; fortunately, it was still under warrenty and was replaced. Now that it is out of warrenty, if it breaks, I'm SOL.

I also talked with the tech. guy at ResMed and learned that the H3i humidifier is being discontinued (as is the H3iPlus); it is being replaced by the H4i. The S8 Elite II is looking like the front-runner.

Thanks again guys, for the opinions! And Dreamstalker, OF COURSE your opinion is worth something. That you and I have not always seen things from the same perspective does not, in any way, mean that I don't want to hear it. The more opinions the better -it's all grist for the mill!

WS,

Welcome back. I just had a stray thought about your absence last week.

You may have missed the sad news about Snoredog passing at an early age. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36964&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... oredog+rip

I second on the Resmed S8 Elite. I have it. Very quiet and easy to travel with.

Sad news indeed regarding Snoredog. I found out just recently of his death. Thanks Rooster for mentioning this to me.
