Dry mouth - but not mouth-breathing

Post by cpapsue » Fri May 08, 2009 5:25 am

Last 3 nights I've awakened with the feeling that my mouth was glued shut. Teeth felt cemeted to every surface. I had to wiggle my cheeks til I got enough moisture to even begin to open my mouth. My tongue has a sore area on it too. It's as though I sucked the moisture right out of every tissue in my mouth. Pretty picture!

What could be going on here? Help!

How do you know you're not mouth breathing?

Let's clarify a little bit....."Breathing" infers "air going in-and-out"....

You're not "breathing".....but, I'll bet you're "leaking".

Buy a roll of 3M Blue #2080 Delicate Release painter's tape....from Lowe's....and experiment.

Since I couldn't open or even separate my lips when I woke up, I figured nothing could be going in or out. My throat isn't dry when this happens.

I have had an occasional leak or puff up, but never to the point of dryness (that I'm aware of). I had done a search and read a lot of other posts, this just seems a little different I thought.

I'll take your advice and buy some tape or Polident strips and see what happens or doesn't happen!

Sue,
I have been getting the same thing over the last two nights. When I first switched to a nasal pillow mask six weeks ago, I thought that I would have a problem with mouth breathing so I had the blue tape handy. I was surprised that my brain apparently knew to keep it shut so I had low leak rates and did not need the tape.

I was awakened last night by a little popping noise - it was the air popping out of my mouth. Of course I couldn't find the tape so I am off to Lowes on the way home tonight. Funny how things change. (See my signature line.) Good luck!

I have to admit, when I first read the blue tape idea, I thought it was insane. However, while trying out the Nasal Aire II, I've had to make sure my mouth stayed closed, so I've used a little X of blue tape. It really does work well! Stays stuck all night, but comes off with no problem and no attached skin the next morning. I have relatively sensitive skin, but it doesn't seem to bother me at all. I forget it's even there until I wake up and try to say "good morning" to the cat
