Nose Itches

Post by wlbecker » Sun Apr 19, 2009 6:33 pm

This has likely been "covered" before, but I use a full face mask for Central Sleep Apnea. Every single night my nose starts to itch to the point that I have to break the seal or turn it off to scratch my nose. This drives me crazy. Is the humidifier supposed to stop this? Is there a better soap or any thing anyone can tell me? Thanks....

I don't know how to get it stop, but others have suggested that you use a wooden popsicle stick to scratch. Just lift up the mask slightly and stick the stick under it. It doesn't disturb much or for long, and it does the trick. Works for me though I too wish I could figure out how to stop it the first place.

I haven't had that problem, so can't help with that. Just wanted to welcome you to the message board while we both watch for suggestions from others who may have experienced itchiness.

Is it the outside or the inside of your nose that begins to itch?

oops.. just as I was getting ready to hit submit for my post, I see that talktobon posted a reply. That's a clever way -- the popsicle stick! Cool.

I had that problem when using the Quattro. Switched to the Liberty, now I can scratch where it itches. I don't have a clue how to stop it, seems it never itched until I had the mask on and adjusted for a good seal. Same with an itch anywhere else, never starts 'till I get comfortable.

Try rubbing the area that your mask will cover.....nose, cheeks, etc.....BEFORE you put the mask on and start the machine. Doing that tends to desensitize the area and may allow you to get to sleep before any itching can occur. Works for me.

I had some itching issues... of course ALWAYS after putting the mask on.

No longer have those and still using the same equipment... Quattro. What seems to have worked for me is to give my face & nose a few rubs with my hands immediately before putting on the mask.

My theory as to why this works is that the rubbing dislodges anything that may be on my face & nose that might move around in the airflow thus causing an itch.

My nose itches with the quatro pro ( I think the airflow over the bridge of the nose is what tickles) .. I just learned to lift the mask with one hand and scratch with the other

That's funny, I've been having the same sensation with a Quattro.

In one case, I took the mask off and looked closely. Saw a very long hair inside the mask. It wouldn't be one of my hairs because I haven't had hairs that long since the 80s. So I asked my wife to stop leaving her hairs sitting around where they can get caught in my mask.

In other cases, though, there have been no hairs around. At least that I could see.

Thanks for the stick idea. That will probably work pretty well for me.

I use the same trick as Wulfman. Works for me. Give your face a GOOD rub all over and "extra" on the nose and if you have to...up the nose with a finger.

I am in the process of converting to using a quattro and have had the itch issue a couple of nights. Now i wipe my face with a warm wash cloth prior to fitting my mask every night, i have not had any itch issues since then but i've only been doing that 2 nights. The warm wipe down also helps with the whole concept of winding down before going to sleep.

BAH! I just got a Quatro to try. I still have a lot of leak and dry mouth issues with the Liberty.

Now I have to turn the machine off 2-3 times a night to ITCH my nose. I will try the Popsicle stick and face rubbing suggestions.

On top of that my mouth is even dryer with the Quatro than the Liberty. (anyone ever tape their mouth with a full face mask?)

I'm going to try a nasal mask again, but I don't have much confidence it will work for me.

Tell me about it!! Every night I have this problem! I haven't really found any solution to it since most masks ... I hate them! And for me the humidifier just makes it worse. My nose fills up with water even on the low setting then the water flutters around in there and ... YOU GUESSED IT: ITCHES! And tickles. I have to take the mask off and deal with that. I think it's just one of those CPAP annoyances you learn to live with...or ignore til you fall asleep!

I had that problem for the first week when I started(2 weeks ago), and then I started doing the same thing. I wash my face first and then do a good rub down where my mask will set. It seems to be helping.
