I was dumb - need a quick answer
I was dumb - need a quick answer
I just got a message on my resmed machine - 'REPLACE FILTER'
Now, that's pretty simple. I actually bought filters some a few weeks ago, so I do have spares. Took the old one out, and it was a bit discoloured, so the message was timely.
But now I can't remember if it goes with the blue side in or out. Among the 40,000 experts out there, can anyone tell me?

IIRC It doesn't matter BUT I just went in & grabbed the filter out of my Resmed & was a bit concerned to see it was so dark it had lost its colour
so I washed it & discovered that the blue was on the outside. Dust had added a new layer - in looking at the construction of it it really matters
not which way you put it in but if you have it blue side out & one day it is no longer blue - you know exactly what to do

thanks dsm
I thought that it was probably irrelevant, but I get in trouble all the time for making those sort of decisions, so I thought I'd ask.
So what is the blue dye for? Is it so they can charge more, or am I just a cynic who's spent too much time in manufacturing and marketing?

I actually think it is for the reason mentioned. If it ain't blue then it is surely 'through'
The construction is such it can be used any way (blue in blue out).
Also must confess, I only ever wash my filters out & reuse them - even though there are packets of them floating around

Well, I was thinking exactly that - just a quick rinse should be fine. next time!

From the resmed web site;
Replacing the Air Filter
!
CAUTION
• Do not wash the air filter. The air filter is not washable or reusable.
• The air filter cover protects the device in the event of accidental liquid
spillage onto the device. Ensure the air filter and air filter cover are fitted at
all times.
1 Remove the air filter cover at the back of the device.
2 Remove and discard the old air filter.
3 Insert a new filter with the blue tinted side facing out from the device.
4 Replace the air filter cover.

DME told me blue side out -> Blue-to-blue (meaning the body of the machine) she said.

Re: I was dumb - need a quick answer
The blue side seems to me to be a layer with a different density. It could be the result of making it blue, but it seems a little stiffer than the rest of the filter.
It might let big particles build up on the outside allowing you to do a quick brushoff between replacements. It could also force the build up to be visible rather than have the particles go inside the filter making it seem clean when it actually has a lot of dust embedded inside.
It might be hydrophobic blocking water better.
Idk.

Re: I was dumb - need a quick answer
Blue side out is the way to go.
The filter has two layers. The blue layer is coarser and the white layer is finer. By having the coarser filter toward the outside only the fine particles get to the white layer. If the white layer were on the outside all particles would be caught by the while layer and the filter would clog up faster. The dual layer approach is a way for the filter to last longer.

Re: I was dumb - need a quick answer
I go along with the comments that the blue is coarser & stiffer, it looks to be about 1/4 to 1/5 of the outer layer.
Good to get to the bottom of it.

Re: I was dumb - need a quick answer
The reason you don't wash any air filter that's not supposed to be washed, the washing changes the air flow in the filter, usually decreasing the air flow. the cells in the filter swell up and change shape. some filters are made to wash and some aren't, that's why the instructions are published. Brenda has the definitive answer here. Sometimes checking the manufacturer's web site is really good idea...thanks Brenda for providing the information.

Quite all right K, I certainly appreciated your input on a number of posts for definitive answers. I am serious! Your posts on distilled water vs. any type of water was insightful and ultimately very educational.kopoloff wrote:Thanks everyone. I still use distilled water!
