titration tonight

Post by Grabraham » Thu Aug 25, 2005 1:59 pm

Well I have been on the hose for a month now and I am finally getting a titration sleep study. I am really curious to see what they find and how it compare to the original "Rx" for a setting of 7 which I have no idea where that number even came from so in about 4 1/2 hours they will start wiring me all up... I took tommorow off as I explained to my boss that the word Sleep in "sleep study" is very missleading

Good luck tonight, Grab!

I'll never understand why, when you were going to have to wait a full month before getting a "final" titration study, the doctor put you on a straight cpap machine that gives no useful info instead of putting you on an autopap which could have been gathering a ton of useful data all this time.

Anyway, glad they're finally getting around to doing that last kinda' important little thing for you...that little thing called the titration.

We want a full account when you get back, please! Your posts are always so good!

Also sending you "good luck" wishes for tonight, Grab! Have you had a chance to read all the hints and tips about what to bring with you tonight? Your own pillow, maybe a sleep aid kinda pill, comfy jammies, etc?

For me, I hadn't had a decent night's sleep in over 3 years, so when they titrated me, even though I was wired up like Frankenstein's beast, I slept like a baby and the morning it was over said to the sleep tech "I gotta get one of those!!!" LOL That was 8.5 months ago and things are MUCH better now.

Also, do you have any idea when the results from tonight's study will be ready/interpreted and when you'll finally get your very own XPAP? Again, remember the wisdom from here about getting your own copy of the full report, a copy of your prescription (and tell the Dr. exactly how you want it written, if possible), etc.

Good luck and sweet dreams!

This therapy WORKS!!!

Thanks.

I actually already have a REMstar Plus. Too bad I did not start reading here until AFTER my visit to the DME. My primary reviewed my initial sleep study results with me and 3 days later I was sitting in the dme with them demonstrating it and took it home. I had no clue what there was out there for xpap options. Tonight I bring my hose and mask and they hook me up and start tweeking

Good Afternoon!! all went reasonably well at the sleep study. I was the only one of the three of us there lastnight that was already diagnosed so the tech that wired me had me explaining to one of the patients that a sleeping with a mask is really not that difficult and gets less dificult once you have a really good sleep.

I think the best part for me was being able to actually try half a dozen masks I own a comfortlite and sleeping on my back has been difficult because of the location of that swivel connector on the back.

I slept very comfortably with a Mirage FF mask (which I got to take home) and I also really liked the Activa. I went to my DME and picked up a Mirage so now I have 3 masks to choose from I learned from the tech that I did really well at 14 cm wich does not surprise me since my wife told me I am still having apnea's at the 7 cm the set me at initially. I am going to bump my pressure and then set it back before I hve to lug the REMstar back into the dme and have him 'SET' it . The tech said that I was still struggling occasionaly in the 10-13 range and when he hit 14 I went right into REM before he could make it back to the computer station. I did reccomend that the other paitents come to cpaptalk to learn more about apnea and this whole fun world we live in

Yay! Sounds like the kind of experience we'd wish for everyone... and that recommendation of cpaptalk to the others!

I also learned that the techs idea of proper mask fit is "tight enough to cause pain" LOL

At least from me experience here I knew that the Activa was not supposed to be cinched down tight. Once I showed the tech how the mask was supposed to work she thought it was really "neat" She really was very nice and knows allot about apnea but not as much about the masks as I would have expected. I swear with the FF mask she would have had someone sit on the mask so she could get it just a little tighter LOL but walking in with enough knowledge about the masks to feel enabled to make your own adjustments makes the experience MUCH better.

New at all this..I don't have the readout equipment ..

Post by Brea » Fri Aug 26, 2005 8:34 pm

Wonder .....Am I the only one who's Dr said, "Try it for a month and come back and we will see how you are feeling." ? I didnt even know anyone else could read it until the Tech came to the house with the machine and told me the Dr would read it. Thanks. Sort of like everything is mysterious and thank goodness for the website.

I'm new at all this also, having had my CPAP one week and two days now. So....are you supposed to have a followup sleep study? I do not have one of those recording CPAP's...I guess the insurance company is renting a Devilbiss for me right now and it is set at 9. It has a ramp feature that I don't use because I feel like I'm suffocating....I just turn the thing on and slap on the mask (comfortlite). No one has said anything about any followup at all.....

Jan, I really don't know what is considered "normal procedure" with this. I don't have the equipment either to tell if my #6 setting is okay or what. Guess I'll just try to hang in there. I think my Tech was supposed to call me in a week or so. I did okay the first 3 nights but last night I couldnt get the mask to feel right so I ended up taking it off. Hope tonight is better. In fact, I need to get in bed now as it's 12:20. My problem was being so sleepy all the time....I felt like I had always been sleeping great but never felt rested upon waking. That's what started all this!

In my case, the second sleep study was for them to determine what setting was optimal for treatrment. To be honest I have NO idea why I was given a straight CPAP with a 7 setting. Unless there is a guidline that says start them there and see how it goes? Especially since my 'real' setting will likely be 14 once they process the data from the titration study. I bumped my setting up to 14 and seemed to sleep better last night so we shall see

Grab,

I actually slept good last night with my mask on! However I did wake up this morning with red area around nose. Guess it was too tight.

You said that you set your machine higher . How? Mine is set on 6 and doesn't move. I guess Dr must have done that somehow. Who knows?
Anyway I probably will wait and see anyway, but I would like to know just in case I feel the need.
