getting a CPAP

Post by 678 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:07 am

I'm so glad I found this site. I came on a few months ago to learn about cpaps and find out how to get one. My husband's doctor had suggested by-passing Medicare and buying a CPAP off Craig's list. Someone here suggested calling local DMEs and seeing what they sell and for how much. I read some pretty awful horror stories from people about DMEs and they're "practices". I got lucky and found a great DME. She knew how Medicare worked and how to work it for us. She said since the last study was with in two years Medicare would accept it and to have the second one done for titration. Well, it took longer than I expected but I am really happy with the results. We used a different sleep study lab (it was closer to home and the people were super nice) and come to find out we actually ended up with a VPAP because of central apneas occurring on cpap. If we hadn't done the second study and bought a machine we wouldn't have gotten what was needed and, though, we might have gotten there in the end, the road would have been soooooo much longer and more complicated. I almost peed my pants Tuesday when we met the DME in person. We just happened to be in town, called them up and they took us right in with no appointment. My husband is doing amazing well with the mask and machine. Already, he's wearing it all night. Even after taking it off and sleeping a little while longer he's breathing so much better. No snoring, no stopping breathing, just nice easy breaths. I know it's VERY early in the process but we can handle whatever happens with the help of our doctor and the people on this site. Wooohooooo
