New Dentures and Cpap mask-Help

Post by rifenbcjr » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:15 pm

Does anyone have advice or experience with using the cpap with new dentures? I just had 7 teeth removed from the top and 2 from the bottom. I will have a full denture on the top and a partial on the bottom. I use a dreamseal w/dream cushion mask and it presses on the my gum between my nose and mouth to seal. That area is sooooo tender both from the denture rubbing and, without the denture, there appears to be small areas of exposed bone that send the most excruiating pain if the air blows on it.

I've asked the oral surgeon about it and he said I didn't have a choice about wearing the cpap, because he said he had never seen anyone who's stats fell so quickly during my surgery (w/IV sedation). I remember waking up during the surgery crying in pain and later when I asked about it, he said they had to keep bringing me up from the sedation because I would stop breathing. He said he was never so glad to get a surgery over!

So from his point of view - not using the cpap was NOT AN OPTION for any period of time. The denture seems to block the worst of the electric shock kind of pain when the air hits (whatever it is hitting) he assumes a bone (and he did an xray to make sure it had not invaded the sinus). He said the pain was similar to when the dentist blows air/water into a tooth cavity - it's a terrible kind of pain, but until it's healed itself, they can't seal it up because an infection could be sealed into it. It has to close naturally.

I just wondered if anyone else had dealt with this situation and if a type of mask might be better - or any kind of treatment to heal the sores quicker...etc. Anything!! I'm game for ANYTHING AT THIS POINT. HELP!

Boy I sure feel for you I,ve had my dentures for decades, I would suggest a full face mask at any cost . This will allow your mouth time to heal and provide much needed CPAP. It,s hard enough to adapt to something new without added stress of two problems mouth pain and Apneas

I can only speak for my husband who has upper dentures and a lower partial. He wears a full face mask and his dentures at night. He was told by the DME not to wear his dentures with the mask and he had a heck of time with the correct fit and leaks until he started wearing them and it filled out his facial structure. He's never had denture pain from the mask.

My husband has upper dentures that he does not wear at night and he can only use a full face mask. He likes the Ultra Mirage the best with Quattro coming in second.

I can't help with the mask problem, but do have an answer to help heal your gums. Buy some Natural (not synthetic) Vitamin E capsules. Pierce the soft cap with a needle and squeeze the oil onto your finger and apply to the raw/sore area. (Please make sure the area is not infected.) My gums healed so fast even the Dentist was amazed.

I also have new upper dentures and wear a regular mask. The pain is unreal, my gums are sore and bone is exposed where the mask puts pressure on the denture. My dentist gave me some pain killing gel but it only works for a few minutes, then the pain returns. I just ordered a full face mask and hopes this solves my problem. A good nights sleep without gum pain would be nice.

I would suggest something like the Aeiomed Headrest (or any nasal mask that covers only the nose in which the hose goes above/over the head. If you are a mouth-breather (who'd need a full face mask normally) see if you can do mouth "taping" until you're healed, so there will be no impact from a "regular" masks edges pressing in on your face.

I have to wear my dentures & partial to bed every night. I have the Quattro FFM, and it leaks, and it leaks more without the dentures. My DME is coming Mon. to fit me for something else. Good Luck with your search..

Given the pain you describe I assume the extractions are very recent? I remember twice encountering what they call a "dry socket" where the blood clot in the "socket" or "cavity" where the tooth had been breaks loose and is exposed to air. The pain can be EXCRUCIATING. Mine happened to occur w/two back molars. The dentist packed the cavity w/gauze or some such material soaked w/a pain killer. Worked like a charm. Thank goodness!!! It only took a day or two for the inside of the "socket" to heal enough the packing could be removed.

There usually is not enough bone left by the time we need dentures for a mask to set securely under the nose between nose and lip. That is why most all of us need to wear our upper denture for a good seal w/our nasal cushion masks. I wear just the upper to bed.

I am waiting for my gums to heal enough for the impressions to be taken for my upper partial- they were badly infected. I use a Quattro and at first, I had some soreness wearing it. Now that the infection is subsiding, I have no problem, amd no problem with a lot of leaking.I am hoping this means I will not have to wear the partial to bed, but we will see. Good luck to you in your journey.

This seems to be an old site. I am trying to find a way to not wear upper full denture but no luck tonight. Leaks too much. No pain tho. The things I am concerned with is the trigeminal nerve acting up (tic douloreux) with air blowing up my nose; a return of migraine headaches which have not had since1980, and Tmj. So far am flirting with Tmj and migraine flickers surfacing. Mother and sister both had dentures and tic. Just concerns.

I wonder why the DME would say that? I was told to take the dentures out at night by my dentist..

Is your dentist a Cpap expert?

I've had all upper teeth, and all removed but 4 lower teeth remaining. Lower front two teeth removed, then two on each side. I tend to make my top gums sore running my lower remaining teeth into my upper gums. I tried using a sports mouthguard, but it was too stiff and hurt my gums. I found a custom made mouthguard at proteethguard, google it. Hope this isn't against the rules.

My dentist and PCP both told me not to wear plate and partial while sleeping.

Cheers,
otrpu
