Considering a Respironics M Auto-Pap with A-Flex

Post by remstarcpap » Wed Mar 25, 2009 2:53 pm

Hi,

I am considering buy a lightly used Respironics M Auto-Pap with A-Flex. I've been using a Remstar Pro (tank). Any thoughts on this machine. I already have the data reader and software to read the data from Respironics machines, or I would consider the Intellipap. Pros and cons of this machine?

Thanks for any inputs.

Andy

I think you'd be very pleased with the M Auto with A-flex's exhalation relief when using "A-flex."

You might find it to be a noisier machine than your old "tank" model. And you might not like how small the humidifier water chamber is, if you've been using integrated heated humidification.

I love A-Flex, so I do like that machine. However, I use a separate Fisher & Paykel heated humidifier (holds plenty of water for three nights.)

Both are very good machines. Depending on which version of the software you currently have, you would need either Encore Pro v. 1.8 or Encore Viewer 1.0 for the M Series Auto w/A-Flex.

"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

If you can get a lightly used Respironics A-Flex, then you can't go wrong. With Repsironics being a major player it will probably be a lot easier to find a good used machine at a decent price. Here are the cons...

Some say the M Series is too loud. Not so for me but I'm not senstive to that kind of thing.

Some don't like the "brick" of the power supply. Whatever.

Some don't like the "blue lights". I'm afraid of the dark so this works out great for me... (cover them if they bother you).

It doesn't look "cool". If that's a problem then check out the Resmed...

To me it's a no brainer. If you can get good A-Flex for a good price, then go for it. I love mine...

SnuggleHose - Got the 8 foot and cut it down to 6, used the rest for mask hoses.
Memory Foam Pillow - Cut my own out of my Tempur-pedic pillow. (works great!)
Hose Mgmt - Velcro Tie Strap

For those that feel that the RESmed is a bit loud ...

Respironics does make a "silencer" that fits over the intake port ... where the filter is.

It's supposed to cut the noise by 2 db ... it really does help.

I didn't find it on the Respironics site, but rather an on-line supplier's site.

Yes, here it is, the "Whisper Cap." Got one on my M Series, it does help.

Given the recent post about a smell that can't be removed from an M Series machine, I'd definitely try to sniff it first.

If you can't do that, then decide if you're willing to throw this money away, if the machine smells bad and you can't clean that smell out.

Other than that, I'd definitely buy another M Series Auto. I've been very pleased with mine. I fully believe in the patient having access to all the bells and whistles, just in case you need or want them.

Cheers,
Barbara

So far with my new aflex m series my ahi is lower as well as my leaks, I'm getting a few more weeks data before I post the results, but all in all I am defiantly sleeping better with aflex then with cflex.
Just over three years now on cpap, I wish that I could have started sooner.
