Naps = Very High AHI?

Post by tattooyu » Fri Mar 13, 2009 4:23 pm

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38166&hilit=naps+ahi

I was searching for information regarding why naps seems to generate horrible numbers on my ResMed Autoset II. I came across the thread above, which answered some of my questions, but left two questions unanswered:
  1. Does anyone else have horrible numbers during naps?
  2. If most people do, why does that happen?
I always use a settling time of at least 15 minutes, in order to avoid bogus data from being recorded. However, when I take a nap, either after a physically exhausting day or a previously bad night's sleep (I am still dialing in my therapy), my AHI is in the 20s-40s (HI in the 20s-30s, AI between 5-10). During a good night, my numbers are coming close to normal/optimal.

Is it normal to have clusters of events when first falling asleep that average out over a full night but not during a 1 hour nap?

I'm curious to see what my new ResScan software shows during that nap.

The machine is not geared for such short times as naps usually take, so don't expect to get any meaningful info from it. Some will only register decent data after 4 hours, others maybe shorter, but I don't know which ones or how long.

Interesting poll since I was thinking about posting the opposite question. My daily "nap" is actually a deep sleep for about two hours right after work. This is always when I get great numbers on my AHI with AI routinely posting zero. I've been concerned that these numbers subsequently improve my overall sleep numbers during the morning reading since my daily reading is never as good as that for the previous afternoon's nap.

Your poll doesn't give an option for better nap numbers.

I don't normally nap. Sometimes I will fall asleep if I sit in too soft of a chair after lunch.
I would have to say any nap I have taken since I have been on cpap has been less than 15 minutes.

I always use my machine if I take a nap but I take my smart card out for the nap. I find that adding the nap data messes up my night time data, giving me higher numbers.

Nap numbers are also my best numbers - but that wasn't a choice in the poll.

I just cannot seem to take a nap since CPAP. And believe, me I've tried, since it used to be my hobby.

That won't work with the newer Resmed units because the data is stored on the machine and the card is only used to transfer info to a computer.

Since my naps are in bed, long and deep (probably a hold over from my pre-CPAP therapy) I collect the data and consider them as part of my cumulative daily sleep cycle; I rarely lie down for the night until after midnight and then rise for work around 6:15 am.

I take naps regularly and seldom have apnea events during a nap so I don't use the machine. I have set the machine on 5 to check myself and still get no apnea events even though that pressure is well below what I require at night to minimize apnea events.I only sleep about 45 minutes to an hour.

I reset the poll to add an option for "better numbers after nap".

My naps almost always score really high AHI numbers and always have. I'm thinking that it may be that I usually fall asleep on my back during naps, whereas at night I usually turn over on my side before falling asleep.

Very rarely do I take naps. Sometimes when I'm on vacation I will take a nap in the afternoon around 3 or 4pm.

Pre-xPAP days I would regularly take naps and often those naps would be unscheduled & unplanned... like falling asleep in front of the TV and waking up later asking myself "what happened to the hockey game???".

I think mine are better since I generally only sleep for less than an hour during naps....and probably don't get REM when I'm doing so, so not many events during non-REM periods.
