Are PapPillows worth the money?
I sleep on my stomach and I am wondering if a PapPillow is worth the investment. And can you get a cotton pillow case that will fit one of these?
Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
I use this one, love it! And, they sell pillowcases for it as well, but I use a regular pillowcase on mine.

If you sleep on your stomach, you need to use the Falcon position and no pillow. Dr. Eric Falcon is a member here and he explains how to sleep on your stomach at http://www.uarsrelief.com/sleeppositions.html .
I was not able to sleep on my stomach while wearing my Hybrid mask, until Dr. Falcon explained the proper technique.
BTW, you need to fill out your equipment profile. This will help you get better answers here. The model of mask you are using can affect the sleeping position.

Rooster,
INTERESTING link. I think I'm gonna try that sleep position.
BTW, did you buy his books? Did they help? How do you feel about Claritin before bed?
Inquiring Mind wants to know....

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
Rooster,
That is certainly a different way to sleep. I bet that would take some getting used to but worth a try. Thanks!
P.S. My PSG is next weekend so I dont have a machine yet, but I am certain that is where I am heading. I am trying to absorb and learn as much as I can and I am so glad I found this forum before my test!

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
My wife helped to make a pillow for me. We started with a generic memory foam pillow from one of the "marts". Both sides were cut out (electric knife cuts foam like a pro) with reliefs that allow the mask to dangle over the edge of the pillow during sleep. Additionally, the pillow was raised to the proper level (I have fairly broad shoulders and side-sleep) by adding padding to the bottom.
I LOVE it. Made living with the mask much better, and I don't wake up with dry-eye from the mask slipping to one side. Also tends to lessen the tracks around my face.
Price for the home-made pillow was under $20.

Will wonders ever cease ?! My father slept in that position for years! I too used it for many many years, complete with the adaptation of the pillow against your chest.
I don't use it as much now as I used to because I've developed osteoarthritis in my knees. The position puts pressure on the knee of the leg that is kept straight-down and the pain wakes me up. Also, I find that I still need a THIN pillow to keep my nasal mask from being displaced by the bed. I've been wondering about the benefits of a pap-pillow in this case.
I'm workin' on it.

I tried that last night. I think I'm too fat in the abdomen and my boobs felt squashed.
Might try it again sometime. I routinely lay with my legs like that, but on my shoulder - with both arms going the same direction away from me.
Cheers,
B.

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
That's where the memory foam pad helps me out. I'm not too big in the belly but those Shiner Bocks do take their toll and on a regular mattress I would tend to have lower back pain that would go away after I turned over onto my back for a couple of minutes. With memory foam I didn't have that problem at all.Babette wrote:I tried that last night. I think I'm too fat in the abdomen and my boobs felt squashed.

I assume had I had the Phil Mickelson syndrome (man boobs) they would have sunk into the memory foam as well...
But now that I'm on the hose I've discarded the whole stomach sleeping. Side sleeping is supposed to be better for you anyway...

It's a German beer (a bock -- dark brown in color, but NOT black like a Guinness) brewed in Shiner, Texas. Nectar of the gods...Babette wrote:Whazza "Shiner Bocks"? Is it something related to beer? (Bock)

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
Bought a PAP pillow a few years ago. I use it a few nights a week. I rotate between 3 pillows in my arsenal:
(1) Pappillow.
(2) King size latex pillow (you can sleep near the ends and squish it to conform to your preferences.
(3) Target formable pillow. I have 3 of these. Use one between my knees, give one a big hug, and the other I sometimes use for my head pillow. Also very squishable, so I sleep near the ends on my side, and form it to my preference.
By mixing it up, nothing gets static, and my neck gets a variety of different positions.
All 3 of the above work fine for back or side sleeping. BTW, I use an activa and the straps are extremely lose. Counter-intuitively, if I tighten the straps, I have endless trouble with leaks, uneven pulling etc...
Finally, I would say the Pappillow is a good product, but if budget is an issue, another alternative will work fine too.

Re: Are PapPillows worth the money?
I just sliced up a $160 Tempur-Pedic pillow to make it PAP friendly if that gives you an idea how I feel about PapPillows (I didn't pay near that list price but it sounds more impressive that way, don't you agree... ). I tried out a cheap foam pillow to proof out the concept, and I loved it. I LOVE my Tempur-pedic brand pillow because the quality is about 10X that of the $17 big lots pillow, and since I want to use it and I'm thinking I just might stick to this whole CPAP "stuff", I figured I'd better get busy.
It hurt to cut into that pillow, but the results were great so I'm glad I did it.
