why did I do so well in the beginning?

Post by vaderboi » Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:21 pm

Two weeks ago, I was feeling great. I felt like my old self again. Now some of my symptoms are back. What happened? I'm discouraged and frustrated.

Same thing happened to me. I got more relaxed, mouth dropped open and caused all sorts of horrendous leaks.

Can you check your numbers on your machine? Hold down the left and right arrow buttons and you should be able to review your Results.

Possible problems:
  • Leak rate too high causing loss in pressure, thus compromising therapy. Leaks can be caused by poor mask fit or mouth breathing (with nasal mask).
  • AHI (AI + HI) too high caused by incorrect pressure.
I'm sure there are other factors involved, but those are the two biggies that stand out.

My AHI is usually under 5. My leak rate hovers around .20L/s. Some days it's good, and some days it's bad.

Most folks on here strive for an AHI <2 I think, but you have to go by how you feel, too.

The leak rate depends on your mask. For my mask, the Swift LT, 0.2 L/s is mediocre as far as I know. I think mine is supposed to be very close to zero, if not zero. Maybe someone else on here can tell you what your leak rate should be.

Is this only your third week? Don't make too many changes too soon. Do you have the software and card reader to see the data on your computer? Mine should be arriving today! If you don't, most users here will say you are "flying blind" since you can really see what is happening throughout each night, week, etc.

I switched masks about two weeks in. i started out with the quattro, but the forehead posts bother a nerve in my forehead, and are hell to get to sleep with. I think I may just have to suck it up and use the quattro. It seems like I did the best with it. The liberty is great for getting to sleep, but loosens my teeth and leaks a bit more. It seems like what I gained with y quattro, I lost with the liberty. I think I might talk to pad a cheek and see what I can do.

I have never had an AHI that low. AHI runs 4-5 for me, some combination of AI and Hi - always seems to add up to 5, just high enough to piss me off. Since I got the hoser i seem to be sleeping like a ton of bricks. however, this past week with DST kicking in, I have been sleeping 8 hours straight and waking up terribly tired. I am hoping its just DST. My numbers are the same as always - AHI 4-5.

cPAP for me is like that old saying "You may get better but you'll never get well". 25 times a night , my brain says "WAKE THE F*CK UP YOU ARE DYING"

Hi Vaderboi,

I also started with the Quattro about four months ago. It was Ok but had problems with sore nose and red marks on nose bridge and forehead. On Dr.'s recommendation called DME and then, through them, tried several different Full Face masks (Resmeds, Liberty, Respironics). Settled on Fisher & Paykel HC431 and/or HC432. Look at the mask on CPAP.com. The forehead rest is in a different position (may/may not help the nerve issue), it hook under the chin (helps keep mouth closed) and is less $. The 431 comes with three different sizes of cushions in the box--nice way to fit your self. The HC432 tends to run about 1/2 size smaller then the HC431. But, HC432 only comes one size in the box. So best to "fit Your self with the HC431.

Elader,

Before CPAP had AHI >60 (per Sleep Study and my wife) after titration I've been four months at 0.8 to 1.2 depending on sleeping position. It may not be possible for everyone, but it can be done. How bad was your pre-CPAP AHI?

I have a mirage quatro and it leaked and gave me fits. Then I got some of those Remzzs.

Now, I sleep like a baby (well almost). Hell, I am 71 years old and go to bed around 9:00 PM just like most old farts. BUT, using those remzzs has been the answer to my mask leaks.

I know what REM is, but the poster (CharlieMack) above mine said he got some of those Remzzs. I thought it was a thing. I just didn't know what kind of thing. Is it the mask?
