sleepstudy

Post by Bearcat42 » Tue Mar 10, 2009 10:01 pm

Hello all. I am new here and I am needing some advice. I am scheduled for a sleep study on the 21st of this month. I am almost certain that I will be using a cpap machine in the near future because I stop breathing so many times during the night and the fact that I am exhausted all day long. All I want to do is sleep during the day.
I am just curious as to what to expect or what I need to know as I start this journey. Thanks for any help....

Go to bed as early as possible the night before. I've had 2 studies done and both times they woke me up at 4:45 / 5:00 am.

Start by clicking on the Yellow Lightbulb labeled Our Wisdom and begin educating yourself.
Call your insurance company and ask them what local DME CPAP suppliers they are contracted with. Hopefully you will have the option of more than one.
Go to cpap.com, click on CPAP Machines and read about the various CPAPs and APAPs and do the Comparison Check to check for the options and features important to you or that you think might be important to you.

For the sleep study itself I found it best to wear PJs will full length legs and a button front top. The chest wires can be run between the buttons and the full length legs help to keep the leg wires intact and reduced tangling.
Ask to try as many masks as possible and especially to try at least one model of each of the 4 styles: nasal cushion, nasal pillows, full face and hybrid style (nasal pillows w/mouth piece).

I thank you for the advice. I have been looking at cpap.com to get a feel for the various machines offered. My sleep study is being done through the VA and I hope they will give me some choice in what I will have to use. Of course I also have been going through old posts here to see what alot of you suggested. I am really uninformed in this area so I am learning.
I have seen many post their numbers on here and I am anxious to do my study to find out where I stand. But in the meantime I will continue to study up so I can make a halfway intelligent decision when the time comes.

Well, if "just" a CPAP is recommended for you after your titration study these are the fully data capable CPAPs:

1] Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR
2] Resmed S8 Elite II w/EPR
3] Respironics M Series Pro w/C-Flex
4] DeVilBiss IntelliPAP Info

There are the fully data capable APAPs:

1] Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage
2] Resmed S8 AutoSet II
3] Respironics M Series Auto w/C-Flex
4] Respironics M Series Auto w/A-Flex
5] Covidien (Puritan Bennett) Sandman Auto
6] DeVilBiss IntelliPAP Auto

Thanks Slinky. I am really leaning toward the Resmed S8-Elite. I am also thinking about a full face mask because of congestion problems I have. I cant believe how much I dont know about sleep apnea and its many effects on the body and mind. This forum has been a blessing with all of this information. It is a little daunting trying to absorb it all, but oh well, its got to be done I guess.

Make that a Resmed S8 Elite II w/EPR. Its a newer model (2006 vs 2008) and I understand it is even more quiet than the S8 Elite w/EPR. You might as well go for the Humidaire 4i integrated heated humidifier too. Larger capacity and better heating capacity I understand. Or if they try to give you the Humidaire 3i, push them for the conversion kit.

Hey, Rome wasn't built in a day. You'll probably "suffer" some information overload at first but just keep slugging away. It will come to you w/time.
