Broke mask. Ordering stuff from Ebay?

Post by scottyeric » Fri Aug 19, 2005 10:51 pm

Has anyone ordered anything for their CPAP or their CPAP itself from Ebay? My Ultra Mirage Full face mask broke last night after just a month. the forehead support broke off. I just emailed ResMed to see if they would send me a new part. I havent received an answer from them yet. But if they cant Ebay has some pretty decent prices on the same mask. since my Insurance will only pay fora new one every 6 months Im looking to keep it as cheap as possible.. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Scott

I wouldn't buy a machine on there. But have bought several masks that stated they were new and in-the-box. Have not run into any problems. All were as stated.

I would never buy used CPAP supplies.

I bought a mask from Yahoo Auctions that came brand new in the box, sealed with the security tape and in a sealed plastic bag inside from the manufacturer. The short tube assembly on the mask broke in less than a month due to my fault. When I wrote to Resmed, this is what they wrote back:

Hi Lori,
All of our masks have a 90 day warranty. If you call the dealer you purchased your mask from, let them know you spoke to the manufacturer, we will send the broken piece at N/C- providing it's in the 90 period.
Since we are the manufacturer, we do not sell or send product to end users. Below are a couple of other dealers in your area.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks, Chris

ALPINE HOME MEDICAL EQUIPMENT # 11 TECHNOLOGY DR. 631 941-0777 EAST SETAUKET NY

CHS HOME SUPPORT SERVICES # 15 POWER DRIVE 631 694-3435 HAUPPAUGE NY

PRIMECARE / ALLIED MEDCO INC #3587 25 CORPORATE DRIVE 631 447-0093 HOLTSVILLE NY

According to them, you must go back to where you bought it for them to honor their warrantee. She did suggest in a follow-up email, after I explained how I purchased the mask, that I get in touch with the seller and see if they still had any info they could offer about where it originally was purchased so that they themselves (the seller's place of purchase) could help me out.

I ended up getting advice on this site on how to fix it myself and it worked. But unless you can do as described above, don't hold your breath with Resmed. They wouldn't help me out. Sorry I can't offer better news. Maybe someone else had better luck and they'll guide you accordingly.

Broken mask

Post by tomjax » Sat Aug 20, 2005 6:54 am

I am not familiar with your mask and do not know how/where it is broken.
But I wonder if it may ne fixable. My Breeze has broken many times in about every place imaginable.

I take a soldering gun and melt the broken place back together.
Sometimes I have to make a splint from another mask and use it to strengthen the place welded.
You should be familiar with a soldering gun and observe safety principles.
Works for moi.

If I had to order anything it would be from our hosts here, CPAP.COM. Their prices are very, very reasonable (if not the cheapest to be found!) and they've got a wonderful and well deserved reputation.

Good luck - and there are plenty of folks here who are "techies" when it comes to fixes on masks.

I'd not order anything medically related from ebay but what do I know ?

People don’t care what you know until they know that you care.

Lori:
Glad the super-glue fix worked OK as it has for me many times in the past. But as far as the advice i gave you about e-mailing resmed, i guess something has changed with thier customer service! i always had good results dealing with them directly but that was a few years ago. As far as respironics goes , last year i bought a comfortlite mask from CPAP.com and had a problem with the plastic part that clicks in place to the mask (the # 6) and i e-mailed respironics with a request for a new part and they not only sent me a new # 6 pillow - they sent me 6! and in 2 days! i liked this mask at first and i bought another one from johnny (CPAP.COM) for a back up. But then my nares started giving me a lot of trouble and had to discontinue it. the other mask was never opened and CPAP.com took it back for a full refund to me. Johnny's CO. (CPAP.COM) ROCKS!!! They are Honest, Reputable, Caring! The only time i buy anywhere else is if insurance is involved and they dictate the provider etc.
So i'm sorry you had to go to the trouble e-mailing resmed etc. and i think they could have sent you a replacement hose as a courtesy in good faith to a valued customer as respironics did for me.

Best to you,
steve,

Steve,

Thanks again for the great advice of the crazy glue. It is still working.

I agree with you about CPAP.com being the bomb. When the tube broke on Saturday night, on Sunday morning, I ordered a new one from this site. After speaking with you online, I went and fixed it myself. I wrote CPAP.com an email and place a phone call to them trying to cancel the order.

Monday morning, I spoke with I think Christine or Claudia? Now I forget her name, which I shouldn't have because she was so helpful and sweet. But she said although they had put the order through already and billed my credit card, they were in the process of taking care of it and reversing it for me. I never saw a mark on my card in either direction and they cancelled it for me even when it had already gone into production.

I ordered my Breeze from this site, too, a few months ago and they are an absolute delight to deal with. I don't even search around for a cheaper price, if one would exist or not. If ever I need something, this is the place. Yes, I have bought one mask on an auction and did really save myself a lot of money as it came in brand new and legit, but if I need a web site for anything cpap-related, this is the one I will use. Hey, look at this forum. We do owe them our loyalty as far as I'm concerned.

Once again, thanks for your great advice on fixing the tube. So far, so good.

I echo the suggestion to do business with cpap.com
I've bought several items from them and their customer service has been great. Just yesterday I emailed them a question about mask sizing and I had an answer in just a few hours.
They are always helpful, and you can be assured that if you have a problem or questions about what you purchase, they will try to do their best to help you.
I understand though, the insurance/money factor - however I'm not sure I would buy anything medical related such as this, from a stranger.

Broken Mask

Post by Weesa » Sun Aug 21, 2005 8:56 am

The same thing happened to me with my Ultra Mirage Nasal Mask and I have to wait a year for my insurance to cover a new one. I tried super glue but that only lasted one day. In the meantime I looked online and you can purchase just the forehead support for about $20.00 including shipping. I went back to my DME supplier and although they don't sell just the forehead support they gave me one as a courtesy. As a back up I did buy the complete mask w/headgear on ebay just to have as a spare. The price was reasonable and it was 100% factory sealed. I am also extremely careful with my mask now and even wrap it in bubble wrap for extra protection when traveling.

broken mask

Post by tomjax » Sun Aug 21, 2005 9:11 am

Super glue is limited in the types of breaks it can mend.
It may work fine with a linear crack, but is not very good for a clean break.
The only way this can be fixed is to melt it together with a solder gun, preferably with a spline from another mask for parts.
You gotta get it aligned properly and is as god as new if done properly.
write me for details.
