COPD & CPAP Machine

Post by Hetron » Wed Mar 04, 2009 9:58 pm

My wife is in the hospital with a lung infection. She has COPD and is on 2 l/m of oxygen 27/7 at home. Late this afternoon her pulmonary doctor examined her. She just called me and said he's going to put her on a CPAP machine-- starting tonight. She didn't have any other details.

Any idea why this treatment? To force air into her lungs? Only when she's sleeping or around the clock??? Thanks all.

My guess is that they are monitoring her sats around the clock and discovered she was desatting when she was sleeping and thus suspect she has OSA in addition to her COPD.

The latest versions of cpap machines can do some pretty fancy ventilation.

My guesses are as follows ...

1) An S/T bilevel machine with O2 supplement
2) A Respironics AVAPS machine with O2 supplement (they can set this machine to do pressure or volume based ventilation)

I am not going to add an SV machine as a guess as I think the AVAPS machine better suits the brief info we have been given.

Cheers
