Pain in my neck

Post by hope2sleep » Sun Mar 01, 2009 1:50 pm

Hi,

Does anyone have problems with pain in their neck. I wake up in the mornings and have pain in my neck, and on my back across my shoulders. I didn't used to have this before using the c-pap, and didn't have it at first, but the last week or so, have been having trouble with that. Nothing else is different that I can place my finger on. Any suggestions, ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Gayle

Hello Gayle, I have not had the neck pain but yes between the shoulders. I also got it really bad across my chest and ribs when first starting. I have COPD so my lungs don't work real well. I was told that it was being able to take deeper breaths and that the joints were not used to it. It has been getting better. Hope that is all your getting and it will work itself out.

Hi,
I slept in a funny position when I was first on CPAP, so as not to disturb the mask. I had horrible neck pain. I went and had a CTscan and found out I had a bone spur. The bone spur hasn't bothered me since I learned to get more comfortable with the mask. I did have to change pillows. I got one that was more "forgiving." I had been sleeping on "tall" pillows before treatment. I know now that I was attempting to get the airway open!
Best,
Lee Lee

Lee Lee ~ what kind of pillow did you get that helped you? I'm open to suggestions and trying what ever to help make it work.

Thank you

You might want to check the tension on your mask. I was having similar neck & shoulder pain because the lower straps were too tight from trying to keep a seal. I switched to the UM Quattro in the correct size and am free from neck pain.

Just an idea...

David

Hi David,

That suggestion sounds like it might be the cause. The first month I was on the machine, I didn't have pain like that. Then I went back for my follow up visit and the lady looked at my info and found that I was having air leaks. So, she tightened my mask. The lower strap at the back of my neck was so tight it actually hurt. I have since loosened it a little, (trying to be compliant but it hurt too much to leave it like it was) but have been having the pain in my neck. The mask is so tight on my face ~ hurts either side of my nose near my eyes too.

Someone else mentioned that the UM Quattro worked well for them, I hope somehow I could maybe get to switch.

Thank you for your help.

Gayle

The pillow I got is a bit pricey, but for me, it was the answer for the neck pain. It's called the "indulgence" and you can get it at Bed Bath and Beyond, or online.
It's so comfortable and adjustable and shape-able, but it's very supportive.

Argh! Smashing the mask to your face to the point of pain is not the answer. Nobody can comply with that. I'd try other masks until I found the one that was right roe me...

SnuggleHose - Got the 8 foot and cut it down to 6, used the rest for mask hoses.
Memory Foam Pillow - Cut my own out of my Tempur-pedic pillow. (works great!)

I don't think the lady meant to cause me pain. In the office ~ it didn't seem painful how she had it adjusted. It wasn't until that night when I went to bed that I could feel how uncomfortable it was.
