it is interesting but as an amputee with severe lymphodema in my remaining leg and being completely wheelchair dependant- the phrase "abandon all hope etc" comes to mind! all laughs aside it really does make sense, those of us with edema in the lowwer limbs are traditionally advised to try to elevate the legs as much as possible so that it reduces the swelling. As a nurse i am embarressed to say that i have never stopped to consider where the fluid goes when it seeps away from the legs- i guess i sort of assumed that we peed it out!

Oh well, i knew that sleep apnoea is often a life long condition and it just reinforces that i need to get good and friendly with my bedside companion!

Very good. They sneaked something in the last couple of seconds about support socks during the day.
What were they talking about? Can you expound any about that?

http://healthylegs.com/content/Evening_ ... elling.htm There's a lot on the internet about the compression hose. Here's just a quick read.

Ah Good, i missed that bit, that means i should be cured as i wear heavy duty compreshion legging to deal with the lymphodema- does that mean my sleep study is wrong and i do not really need to spend $4000 on a bipap- my good old legging has cured me! Oh darn i forgot about the centrals!

ONly joking! as a trained nurse i certainly question the guys observations that the odema has to move somewhere but i find it hard to believe that this is the major reason for sleep apnoea- at best i think it may be one of many factors- Also the measurements were done on MRI scans which hard represents the typical sleeping posture, his theory using the coke bottle demostration puts the person lying flat - dead flat as in no pillow (like inside and MRI tube)- odematous fluid collects in the lowest part of the body- it is a gravity thing so how many people who snore, have obstructive apnoe sleep absolutely flat. even elevating the head and shoulders a couple of inches would alter the results i would have thought

The sad thing about this sort of report is that i can imagine there will be some out there who will decide they do not need to go to the expense of a couple of sleep studies, seeing a sleep physician, paying for mask, machines, software etc when all they've got to do is perhaps move around a bit more or buy some compression stockings!

I spent much of my career behind a desk, in a car or in an airplane. But someone would have to explain to me why my treated AHI isn't zero on those nights after a full day of hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hi,
Guess I'll have to agree with Rooster.....I'm a government employee and sit most of day at computer but on vacation days, you might find me after an 18 hour straight triathlon-run/bike/kayak and I'm not cured that night?? Maybe it's the wetsuit keeping the fluid in check.(joking) I too, hope people don't go buy socks and hope they are well.

well interesting but i don't agree. as a mechanic i'm on my feet all day and running all over filling in at the parts counter or helping customers out. i have put as many as 5 miles in on hectic days.
if this were true give me a couple lasix and i could skip the cpap.
yes fluid may migrate but it probably only irritates the osa

Perhaps this bit of research is more clue than cure - at least they're thinking about this stuff! CPAP still seems rather medieval to me....

I taught first grade for... ever. I never got to sit down until March and then it was usually for not longer than two minutes. I get 12000-15000 steps daily on my pedometer. I'm not obese. The head of my bed is always elevated. Somehow I don't think support socks are going to make a difference.

Alright I'll bite.

I think the doctor is over simplifying the issue. Our throat is week therefore it's obvious that we are getting enough exercise.

You know, I've been symptomatic since I was 7 - 40 years ago. Back then, we didn't sit around watching television. OK so I watched "Romper Room" every morning, but after it was over the adult shows came on and we children played, outside when possible. I don't remember sitting around allot.

All three of us now know we have OSA. Yes I work in an office as well as my younger sister. But my younger sister spends 6 hours a week working out at the gym (she's done this since college) My older sister is a golf professional, she spends her day on the course from snow-melt to snow-melt, she teaches ice-skating during the winter months. I would not qualify either of them as sedentary. If there is anything to blame, it's our father, who we also believe suffers OSA, I can't remember a time when I didn't hear him snorting durning the night, nor complaining about tiredness.

I won't argue that we as a society "sit around" to much and need more exercise, but I don't appreciate apnea being used as a boggie man - "If you sit around to much, you'll get apnea" I really think this report was just poor science (I also missed the plug for support hose, was that the real purpose?)
