When machine is not set low enough ?

Post by Crest » Mon Feb 09, 2009 5:48 pm

Hello,

My CPAP machine is set at 7.5 - 10.0, I've lost 20 pounds recently but have been feeling kind of crappy during the day.

Does anyone know the ramifications of having the machine set too high on the minimum? In other words, would it make much difference if the machine was set at 7.5 when it should be at 7.0?

I don't think a half cm would make a bit of difference at all. Nor do I think even less minimum pressure would be a good idea or would help.

There can be many things that can make a person feel lousy even if "cpap" is doing its part of the job (keeping the airway open for easy breathing during sleep) perfectly. Other health issues, med side effects, sleep hygiene problems, additional stress in one's life, etc.

Congrats on the weight loss, Marty! Keep up the good work, but I wouldn't be concerned about trying to drop the min pressure on the CPAP, though. Anything below 10 for the min is pretty easy to handle anyway. Unless a person is suffering from aerophagia, there's no compelling reason or "award" for using lower and lower and lower.

Unless you have the software to monitor tweaking results, moving the min pressure lower would be like driving a foggy road at night.

i find it hard to believe that an (auto) machine set too low (on the low side) has no effect. Too much air at any point can be a hinderance

The "effect" would be that if a machine is set too low (minimum pressure), it may not be able to respond quick enough to keep your airway open to stop apnea events. If your machine is sitting at 7 and it needs a pressure of 9 or 10 to stop an event, it may not be able to get there in time and the events will occur. With the exception of leaks and snores, Autos don't adjust pressure very fast.
