BiPAP and BiPAP Auto - what's the difference?

Post by dcryandc » Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:49 pm

I have tried to understand the literature on the BiPAP Auto machines, but it still isn't clear to me.

What does a BiPAP Auto machine do? Is it like an APAP machine that adjusts your settings automatically?

BiPap is the ultimate in exhale relief. Having 2 separate pressure settings.
IPAP = Inspiration Pressure
EPAP= Exhalation Pressure
If you have difficulty exhaling then it could be the relief you need.
Yes, there is an auto model too.

Bipap is Respironics' name for bilevel. An auto bilevel varies the ipap and epap it delivers during the night, so, yes, it is a type of APAP, in that sense. A bilevel that is not an auto will give you the same exact two pressures all night.

With the BiPap auto, which I have, you can use it in straight bi-level mode, or in 'Auto' mode you can pick a minimum pressure setting and a max pressure setting, and the machine will raise or lower pressure to eliminate apnea events. In the Auto mode you still have the bi-level pressures to ease breathing.

Don't feel bad I have been on c-pap for several years and I still can't figure it out. But I will say this the Bipap Auto machine that I have now runs circles around that piece of junk that Apria Ripoff saddled me with to begin with. Maybe I just need more coffee and Old Bushmills !!!

Patrick, that IS one sweet machine you have. I know, it's the same one I have. It's likely why my introduction to hose life was relatively easy for me. I really like that model.

When I first got a Cpap machine I got a Remstar Plus no frills no thrills, set at 20. After one year of feeling like I wanted to Vomit every morning, I called Cpap.com and bought a Remstar Pro 2 C-Flex after a year of using that machine I again self purchased a M-Series B-pap Auto from Cpap.com.
With the help of a very great lady on this forum I talked to one of my doctors and he wrote me a new prescription for the machine I have now.

And YES it is One sweet machine.
Oh yes and thank you RG
