Drying out w/ humidifier

Post by gclausen » Tue Jan 13, 2009 7:47 am

Hi Everyone,
I am newly diagnosed w/ sleep apnea( I knew it long before I was diagnosed). It took 2 sleep studies to determine this. First one, I never fell asleep. Anyway, I started out w/ full face mask only to have the bridge of my nose become extremely irritated to the point that I quit using the machine for a couple of days while i awaited the Hybrid face mask replacement. With new mask, the leaks are non existent and works much better with more movement(side sleeper). The question is how does one keep from waking up every hour to moisten your mouth because it has dried out even with humidifier on highest setting? Am I missing something??? Should I go to nasal only mask??? Help, Still waiting for that good nights sleep.

Okay, did some searching on the forum and can see that there is no magic bullet. Thought there might be something new out there. Thanks for all your help.

There are mouthwashes available that help with dry mouth. Biotene(sp?) is one. Check with your pharmacist to see what is available in your area.

Is there any information showing that the newer small integrated heated humidifiers deliver more/less comfortable humidity than the older larger separate ones?

I have no proof, but it seems like my original Sullivan HumidAire provided more comfortable airflow than the integrated ResMed 3i. The small, integrated ones however are certainly more convenient! Thanks for your thoughts.

You probably need to turn your humidifier setting DOWN or OFF. Too much humidity can close up your nasal passages and then you mouth breathe and then your mouth gets dry. Having a full face mask is no guarantee for eliminating mouth breathing.
Having diabetes can also contribute to dry mouth.

Problem solved. Found out I had thrush from a long round of a wicked antibiotic. That'll dry your mouth out. Sorry to post the topic for nothing. But the advice about the humidifier was good to remember. Cheers!
