Breeze vs Mirage "study"

Post by dianeds » Sat Jan 17, 2009 9:27 am

It worries me that you label the Breeze vs Mirage study as unbiased. You picked 50 Mirage users and tried to see if they would prefer to switch to the Breeze. CPAP users know that it is a long hard process to find a mask that works for YOU, and we all have different needs. You started with a group that had already gone through a process to choose the Mirage. To be unbiased, you should have matched that group with one that had settled on the Breeze, and seen how many would choose to switch to the Mirage. I taught college level statistics for many years, and would have failed any student who proposed such a biased study. Too bad, the results of an unbiased study would have been interesting. (For the record, I have no vested interest---I use another mask, not in the study)

Well written response. I tend to rely somewhat on these "studies" but you have a VERY valid point. Mask fit is extremely personal and over time, we all will get used ot a certain mask and it will become what we are used to and what we are familiar with.

Your suggestion is very vaild. I do appreciate cpap.com trying to conduct some user "tests" and I think they are helpful. I think you have made a great suggestion and hope that it does not fall on deaf ears.

Thank you for you input - I hope it will help make future consumer test challenges even more helpful.

In all fairness, CPAP.com is not a university, or group of scientists or Drs. They are a business, in the business of selling Cpap equipment and supplies. No one should have any expectation that the studies or test runs that they do even come up to the level of a "clinical" study. Any results are purely anecdotal and should be viewed as such. But if they convince a supplier to cough up some free masks for a bunch of people to do an unofficial test run and even a few find a mask they like or can use because of it, in my opinion they deserve an A+ for helping people.

But I never went to college so what do I know?

I agree wholeheartedly! I use statistics for medical studies on a daily basis and don't think, in all fairness, that it's reasonable to compare this to a well-funded clinical study. Yet I think that there is a value in these comparisons just as there is a value to the anecdotal reports from xPAP users on this forum. I notice that this is the first message by the original poster and hope that he/she will consider the context. We have a highly motivated and intelligent group of people on this forum (# of years of formal education is not a prerequisite for knowledge, intelligence and common sense IMHO).

As a footnote, it was not the Mirage Vs. the Breeze - it was The Swift LT Vs. the Breeze.

I think cpap.com deserves thanks for providing these challenges. In this forum this type of challenge is much more "real" to many of us than a clinical study. This, too, has it's place.
