Backache
Backache
This is more than likely not at all related but I thought I would thro this out to the group. I have had my CPAP for about 3 weeks. And starting 3 weeks ago I have been having terrible morning backaches.
I have been waking up with my whole back, but mostly my low back, aching. It sort of feels like muscular spasms but I don't know. I am pretty good for most of the night. Then at about 6am I can't move with out pain. If I turn or twist in any direction it hurts. Lyimng flat on my back in bed is the worst position for me. I have to get out of bed and walk around a bit for the pain to go away by about 85 percent. I may have a 2 out of 10 level for the rest of the day, but by far about a half hour before getting out of bed is terrible. If I lie in bed without getting up, I am in terrible pain in any position. I am on 1 1/8 grain of Armour for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sleeping in the same position you did before CPAP or a different one. This might be causing muscle strain you aren't used to. Or trying to lie still when you are usually more active.
You might try putting a thick pillow under your knees. As most back pain sufferers know, this takes strain off your lower back. Laying flat on your back is about the worst position you can take. Use the pillow between your knees if you sleep on your side. And if you are a stomach sleeper, place a flatter pillow from about the midpoint of your ribcage down to your hips. This also supports the lower back.

Janelle,
Thanks for the advice. I had already thought about the fact that I may be sleeping in one position longer than I used to before the cpap and that that could be the problem. Last night I tried to shift from my right side to my left more often like I did before the cpap and still woke up with a backache. I thought maybe it is my mattress. Putting my piillow under my knees would work for me with one of my normal backaches but this feels like muscle spasms or something. I will mention all this to my chiro today when I see him. The really weird thing is I sleep the whole night with very little discomfort. The pain comes on around 6am and I HAVE TO get out of bed to get the pain to stop.

Had to ressurect this old thread since this is exactly the problem I am having. the only difference is that I have only been able to last for about 4 hours before I wake up in pain. It is the worst pain I have EVER had. It usually involves my upper back. I have been on apap for about 4 months now. I am wondering if higher pressures ( i am at 10-14) could be causing part of this problem? When I wake up in pain, it hurts as I breathe. Most of the pain tends to go away after about an hour and sometimes I am able to go back to sleep. I am going crazy due to lack of sleep!! The doc gave me a back x-ray and says it looks fine. He has also given me SOMA to relax my back. It pretty much just ends up making me dizzy while in pain.
I took a nap yesterday for about 2 hours and forgot to put on my mask and I felt like I slept for 10 hours when I woke up....weird. My encore shows my AHI at around 0.4 . I have been seeing about 1-2 each of hypopneas and obstuctive apneas every night. My AHI on my first study was 68. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks

Back Pain
I have had some back pain myself since beginning APAP. I have an appointment to see a chiropractor in a few days. Mine seems to have to do with the fact that I used to be a back and side sleeper, but since my nose shuts down when I lie on my side, I have been sleeping on my back only since beginning APAP. This has caused stresses to the boday that weren't previously there. A real pain.

Re: Backache
I have a CPAP in 11 and I take backaches almost the same day I began to use it. The CPAP works, but this is a secondary effect. My doctor said me that it is only casual situation.
Any Solution please

Re: Backache
Your are sleeping more deeply and staying in the same position - your body is not used to it. For me it was my hips.
Get a mattress topper and use a pillow between the legs and a pillow with a neck support ( for quick & dirty support , roll a towel and insert in pillow case)
As your body resolves its sleep debt it will start moving again. In the mean time you have to upgrade your bed.

Re: Backache
Hi Gary
I have a back with degraded discs, and multiple fractures, together with osteoporosis.
A few months ago I could hardly walk.
Now I use a lumbar extender, and my back is workable for most of the day. All I have to do is use it 5 minutes when I get up, and 5 minutes before I go to bed. It has literally saved my bacon. (I also use a Niagara massager).

It may not work for you, but it may just give you that flexibility and stretching that makes the difference. It has been a lifesaver for me.
cheers
Mars
PS There are different prices and different names for it at different outlets, so shop around if you are getting one.

Thinking of you and hope it all gets better very soon.

Re: Backache
It's always hard to diagnose back pain over the internet, but the suggestions of mattress, sleeping posture, etc are all good. I like Mars' suggestion of the Back Extender, or just lying over a firm cushion or across a rolled blanket will give a similar result For upper back, you can put a blanket roll higher on your back.
Some gentle, yoga-like stretches might help.

Re: Backache
I have the same problem. I knew it wasn't the mattress because it is brand new for one thing, and I never had this issue when I wasn't on BiPap. When I was having apneas I moved constantly through the night. Now I sleep in almost the same position as I fell asleep in. I might roll over twice in the night, if that. My hose isn't very long so I really can't roll over without causing problems.
Side sleeping was working well for me, but I have had a cough lately that has pulled a muscle in my chest so right side sleeping is painful. I might have to move the BiPap to the other side of the bed in order to do left side sleeping.
