reading smart card

Post by jomac30 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 2:43 pm

I read on cpap.com that you can read your smart card without a card reader if you move your cpap machine near your computer and connect them. Am I interpreting this correctly? It was under some questions and answers.
Also, are the card readers sold from Hong Kong companies as good as the ones sold from American companies?

Which machine was that post talking about? What is the url for that post?

Some machine connect with a cable, however, to the best of my knowledge, for a remstar machine and card, you need a card reader - and not just any old card reader but that DT 3500 or equivalent one.

The card readers are probably made in China (mine is). Hong Kong is probably a location for exports. The US sold card readers are probably from the same factory.

If you have problems with the card reader, and buy from Hong Kong, can you get adequate customer service to get the problem resolved? How long will it take for the HK company to ship to you? How much money do you really save when you consider shipping costs if you order from HK?

Good luck.

I don't know how to copy the url.
On cpap.com I was looking at which machines are fully data capable and came across F.A.Q

Its under frequently asked questions

What is a smart card reader?

Let me know if you find it.

I noticed your reader is from Hong Kong. Do you have any problems with it?

I bought my reader at cpap.com not from HK.

Those questions are pretty generic. For the S7 I believe it was there was an option for cable to the CPAP vs card on some models. For the Goodknight machines, that data is read via a cable not a card reader. However for the Remstar (Respironics) machines, you have to use a card reader.

for the resmed most folks use a resmed card reader (here comes the plug) - i bought a USB adapter for the S8 from Australia (module that connects to your computer via a USB cable versus using a card), tired of the software/hardware and have put both upon cpapauction.com

You will need the software - either Encore Pro or EncoreViewer as well as the card reader in order to download information to your computer.

The card reader is available from different sources and if you google DT3500 card reader should come up with some websites. Mine came from Hong Kong and I have been using it for over a year without any problems. Respironics has a card reader that looks identical to the Mako DT3500 -- but at a significantly higher price.

Hope this helps.
