sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
Okay, I've been on my CPAP since April. Took about 7 months to get to the "can't sleep without it" stage, and I'm there now... finally! I sleep better with it, but, I still get up during the night to pee. I also wake up several times during the night to just roll over or reposition myself. I was under the impression that I would get uninterrupted sleep with CPAP. Is that true? Should I talk to the dr. about it and see if my machine needs adjusting?

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
Hi Somer,
I find that if I drink iced tea, water or any type of liquid up until I go to sleep that I will wake up at least 1 time during the night to use the bathroom, I have also found that if i stop drinking all liquids at least 2 hours before bedtime that I don't wake up at all for that reason!
Now, as far as the perfect sleep, etc. while being hooked up to the hose, I think you we're mis-informed, we always toss and turn and most all of us have to adjust our masks through the night, however with the treatment, we do get a better and much more quality sleep (even though it is interupted) by mask adjusting and bathroom breaks) than before cpap therapy, I know it dosen't seem like it at times but as time goes on, you will see what I mean, just keep going and try to limit your liquid intake a couple of hours before bedtime.

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
As a child I got up in the night to go to the bathroom. From the time I was a youngster I have been getting up in the night for a bathroom break (or 2 or 3 or 4 times). When I would complain to the doctors about it after I reached my 20's they just kind of blew me off and gave me the talk about not drinking liquids in the evening. Doesn't work for me.
By the time I was in my mid 30's I was seeing a neurologist for migraines. When she found out I was up at night as often as I was, she told me that she thought part of my problems was getting up to go to the bathroom so much and said she would give me something to help me sleep more sound so I wouldn't get up to go to the bathroom -- wrong -- it didn't work.
Fast forward another 8 or 10 years and was seeing a doctor for female problems. I was told I needed to have a bladder function test which I had done. When I had surgery for my female problems they stated they would fix my bladder as well. Well to make a long story short -- I have an unusually small bladder and some nerve damage that can't be corrected.
I was in hopes that cpap would help with my awakening to go to the bathroom -- but I still get up often to go -- usually at least 2 times a night -- rarely once a night -- and at times 3 or 4 times. I have pretty well resigned myself that I will always have to make the nightly trips.

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
Thanks SleepyNoMore!! I appreciate it!!!
I feel that I am lucky in some ways -- it could be alot worse!! I have some medical issues that tend to lurk and can make me cranky as all get out -- but I able to get up in the morning and can take care of business like going to work, store, etc. There are so many people less fortunate than I.
I would much rather get up at night to go to the bathroom (and during the day I know where most of the public restrooms are in town ) than what others have to endure because they are not so fortunate!!
By the way are you feeling better since you healed from your surgery earlier in the year?

Yes, Amen to that...
Thank You, Yes I am feeling better but my nose is still so tender when I mask up especially, I haven't been back to my ENT since my last post-op visitin Nov. or Dec. 2007. I have osteoperosis so my bones take longer to heal than people without it. I think I started using my machine to soon, I started trying to wear it a week or two after the surgery, big mistake on my part, now when I wear my mask, one side of my nose makes a pop noise like it's cracked, shoot just my luck!

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
I started getting up at night about 10 years ago, 2 - 3 times to go to the bathroom. It was about the same time I started geting migraines and angina. Figured the night time trips were age related.
I have noticed now that in the last two weeks, on my better CPAP nights, I have not had to get up at all....no change in habits, just the kidneys appear to be less active.

Carol, I feel for you. My DIL has a small bladder, also. She's up several times a night to go. And of course, she can't even get past the nearest 7 Eleven without needing to stop.
Before I started on CPAP, it was not unusual to get up about once an hour. Now, it's so much better that I don't mind awakening once or twice a night.

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
A little over a year ago I was getting up as much as 5 or 6 times a night to go to the bathroom. Was tired all the time,
if I sat for more than 5 minutes I was asleep. Would wake up and have to get to the bathroom as quickly as possible.
I had a life insurance policy that needed to be renewed and had to have a physical. That may have saved my life. The urine
test showed high sugar levels. Went to the Dr. and he confirmed that I am diabetic. The meds helped with the nightly
trips to the bathroom some, but was still tired all day. Tried to get a sleep test done for over a year, but the doctor said
that test is expensive and I don't think you have sleep apnea. Gave me Ambien, which I personally don't care for and would only take if I was completely exhausted. Finally my wife called the doctor and demanded that he give me a referal to a specialist. Had the test done and a machine in a little over a week. If I get everything just right I sleep all night and don't get
up once. I quess I took the long way around to say that a lot of things can cause us to awaken during the night and feel
not fully rested the next day. For me, one of those things was diabetes, the other was apnea. Treating both has improved my sleep dramatically. Still tweaking things, but the proper mask has been the most important factor I've found that impacts
whether I sleep soundly through the night or toss and turn and have get up to go to the bathroom. Stick with it and keep reading this forum, I've learned so much here that I never would have known if left to my doctor and dme. I don't post much here and so many have helped me that don't even know it. My thanks to them and hope that you will find just the right piece
of information that will give you restful sleep and peaceful dreams.

Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
My sleep doc gave me a rather simple explanation which seemed to apply to my situation. The more sleep apnea awakens or arouses you, the less the kidneys rest. Hence, there is a relation of apnea and need to get up during the night. I think that the fact that the reclining position is a natural diuretic makes it even more difficult for an apnea sufferer. Now if that is compounded by the overactive kidneys of a diabetic with high BG, you've got a situation guaranteed to keep one up all night!!!
Re: sleeping better, but still must get up 1-2 times per night
That all sounds like me!!!!! I had br. cancer at 28 with all of the treatments and side effects you've ever heard of! I also had to have complete hysterectomy. I think my bladder may be dropping. I'm only 33 now...more time will tell. But don't you get sick of the nightly trips to the potty???? What I would give for an uninterrupted night of sleep!
I would love to add those cute little pics of my cpap machine and mask, but I don't know how. How can I add those to my posts?
Thanks ladies! Sweet dreams!

Have you tried Detrol or Detrol LA? They have it in generic now. It is for overactive bladder and may help. Unfortunately it didn't do anything for me.somer wrote:That all sounds like me!!!!! To add to your profile go to User Control Panel located under the search box. Please use text instead of the icons. I know the pictures are pretty but with just the picture unless one clicks on it we can't glance at it and tell which equipment you have. For some of us old folks it makes it easier if it is text instead of pictures.

Thanks! I think I finally have my equipment added into my profile. Maybe that will help those of you that have tried to help me!
Never tried Detrol. Thought about it, but was hoping to avoid meds. However, I'm about to that point. Got up 4 times last night!!! Ridiculous!
Happy New year to all!
