Size Does Matter

Post by Violet » Thu Dec 18, 2008 12:52 pm

Nasal pillow size that is. Last night checked out the size of the nasal pillows I was using XS, so changed it to a S. Wow! I didn't have the usual need to take big deep cleansing breaths while trying to settle down to sleep. A lot more oxygen coming in and went right to sleep. And, with more oxygen, all I needed was a thin strip of tape up and down to keep mouth from opening, but I have a feeling there may still be air leaking from lips. Chin straps are claustrophobic.

Hey, wait a second. My wife said she was happy that my ResMed Autoset II w/ EPR wasn't "too big." Was she just being nice?

I have a question related to this post. How do you know if you are wearing the wrong size pillow with the Swift LT. I have started out with a small and often times I feel like I am not getting enough air through as I am inhaling or exhaling. Is that a sign I should try the medium and see if that helps? Also, would mentholatum ointment which I use to help with some nasal soreness I have from the pillows break down the pillow material? Thanks for your help.

The only true way to find the right pillow size is to try them. Try the medium and see if you like them better. As for the mentholatum ointment; it might cause the pillows to not last as long. I use Ayr Gel for sore nares, and pur-sleep(http://www.pur-sleep.com) for aroma therapy. I also use Padacheek products(http://www.padacheek.com)on all my masks to make this more comfortable.

swcompassionate, Test drive each pair of pillows. Mask up, turn on your machine, lay down and roll around and see what you think of them. I suspect you feel you're suffocating because you're not getting enough air pressure. I feel that way when my machine is set too low. What are your machine's settings? Also, are you using the Ramp feature? I cannot use that, as it makes me feel like I'm being suffocated. You might try turning off the Ramp feature, if so.

I find that using anything liquid on my nose while masked up makes my leaks worse. Your mileage may vary. I second the use of Ayr Gel as the moisturizer of choice, rather than Mentholatum. Also, if you have any soreness or dryness, continue using it during the day. It is readily available at Walgreens and Rite Aid.

Good luck!
B.

Thanks for your responses to my questions about sizing. I am going to try the medium size tonight as well as pick up some Ayr gel if it will every stop snowing here in Michigan.
