Whistling Noise

Post by WaynePF » Thu Dec 18, 2008 2:57 am

Okay, here it is the first night with my new Respironics ComfortCurve and I'm up at 3am because the mask started whistling. I tried adjusting the straps, emptying out the moisture that formed inside the nose piece, etc. Nothing worked. I worked on it so long I am now wide awake and frustrated. This is the 4th, 5th, I don't remember, mask I've tried. All I can think is another $100+ down the drain. Beginning to think it is all snake oil.

Whistling always indicates air - prob leaking but where? I'd look at the exhaust port - where you can feel the air coming out. Often this air will carry stuff that will accumulate over time clogging these small holes. Even water can whistle.

A cotton swab may help in cleaning the holes back out.

It should still be under warranty; get it replaced.

I used ( and still do sometimes) the Comfort Curve mask.

I put Plumbers tape (teflon tape?) at the elbow on each side of the piece where the nose piece fits ( hope I made that clear). That completely stopped the whistling noise for me. Wrap it around the thread (smaller part that inserts) part and then snap it back together.

I don't take it apart to clean ( except for removing the nose piece). I just wash the rest of it in one piece and the telfon tape lasts forever, it seems.

I'm not sure if this is where your whistling is coming from but that's where mine whistled.

If I have not been clear, PM me with your email address and I'll try to attach a picture of what I did.

Plumers tape works great. If the mask fits great try the tape to avoid return hassles. I heard the comfortcurve whistle is a common problem. I got a comfortcurve to try and the tape was an easy fix compared to try to get the cheek supports to fit my full face which was impossible.

Thank you everyone for your help. I am pretty sure it is the moisture that builds up inside because nothing is leaking, it is brand new. The whistling actually sounds like tiny piccolos with the pitch changing with almost every exhale. If it were a constant pitch I could probably get used to it but it changes, starts, stops, comes with one piccolo then 2-3, the whole piccolo section playing different notes, ... Grrrrr! I tried emptying out the moisture but it seems it has to be completely dry to not whistle. Think I'll use it until the whistling starts then remove the mask, turn it off and attempt sleep. OR, I could spend yet another $100 and have two and change them out in the middle of the night. Sleep in Army basic training wasn't this hard.

Wayne - -

I don't know much about the Respironics mask; however you might consider trying what works for my ResMed UltraMirage NM when it develops an occasional whistle.

(First, of course, I make sure that the circuit has no leaks, especially where the plastic cover clips over the exhaust. If that's loose, it's gale force noise.)

But here's what I check each night, to prevent whistles on my mask. There is an omega-shaped plastic clip that holds the L-shaped exhaust piece to the large plastic mask part that goes over the nose. If the opening of this omega clip is down, toward chin, then the piece resonates like a saxophone reed, and I'm treated to some uninvited whistling. However, all I need to do is to rotate the clip 180 degrees with my finger (just like dialing an older telephone) so that the opening in the omega is on top, toward forehead. And voila, the issues stops.

Again, I have no idea what your setup is like, but this works every time with the ultra mirage .

Good luck - -
