Anyone ever have an allergic reaction to a mask?

Post by MissAmethyst2U » Sat Dec 13, 2008 3:10 pm

Hey everyone! I haven't been around here in a long while...

Just a lil background been on CPAP since 2004 and have been using the ComfortCurve mask since it came out which has been a couple yrs ago I believe. I have never had a problem with the mask (Yes I know most people would give theirs away they dislike it so bad lol) Its never left bad marks or anything either with a rare occasion I slept wrong and it might leave a lil redness from the silicone cheek pads but would go away after getting up and in the shower kinda thing.

I get a new mask every three months and and I noticed the past two times I have gotten it that it seems to be made 'cheaper' liek the Silicone cheek pads just dont seem to last nor do the Foam ones they send as well. Well, I had been using the 2nd pair of Foam pads with the last mask I got three months ago and three days ago I woke up with a horrible rash liek red spot the shape of the cheek pad with a huge red welp at the bottom part where the cheek pad was. It looked horrible! I thought it would probably go away after a shower but it looked worse. I figured give it til the next day and it would be better. So I switched to my full face mask that night and the next morning it looked even worse and my skin was peeling too. I have some good moisturizer for sensitive skin so I used that hoping it would maybe help. When I went to pick up my grandma she was like omg what happened lol she said it looked like I had ringworm or something on my face I was like geez thanks Grandma!

I went by my sleep docs office since while out running errands since I was right by there and asked if there was anything they could recommend to use cause it kinda looked like I had been punched in the face by then lol. She said my doc was out for the rest of the month and the other doc was seeing patients at the time. The lab tech wouldnt tell me anything of course so they told me to go to my PCP. Went to my PCP's office and they got the nurse to look at it and she said that my doc needed to see that. My doc said it was an allergic reaction to the cheek pads and she gave me an Rx for a cream. Its really bad on the left side but only slightly irritated on the right. I told her I didn't understand why after all this time it would do that, that it just doesnt make sense. She said allergies can happen and appear at anytime. So I am sad that I can no longer use my ComfortCurve I did however just order a Swift LT for Her after seeing a friends Swift LT and it looks like a nice mask so I can't wait to try that one

Here are a couple pics of my face today and this is three days later and after using the Rx cream so you can imagine how bad it looked the first two days...Ohhh, and just FYI I haven't changed any kind of soap or detergent or anything at all...

Glad you are on the mend.

At the beginning of my treatment I used a full face mask for several months. I then began developing a "red ring" where the mask seal touched my skin. It didn't take long until it became irritated and sort of felt like it was burning. I asked the doctor about it and it was suggested that I alternate masks so that I wasn't using the same mask on a continual basis. My face did NOT get as bad as yours though. I have been using the Headrest now for a length of time and so far, knock on wood, I haven't had any problems with it.

Is there anyway you can cover the pads where they touch your face? You might contact Karen aka PadACheek and see if she has any suggestions that might help you. She does wonders with mask issues.

I seem to have seen posting in the past about mask allergies, maybe you could find something if you try the search thing. sorry i can't remember any details, just allergic to certain types of plastic or silicone rubber really. good luck.
can you put anything between your face and the straps? maybe it would slip out. try a headscarf a la Queen Eliz!

Whenever I buy a new mask, or seal, I soak every soakable part in soapy water for 30-60 minutes. My very firs, unsoaked mask caused carpet burns of my face - the soaking solved that problem. That was a tip given by Respironics rep on a chat I read years ago.
