no doubt they work for some, but not even to order a polysomnogram, or refer to a sleep specialist for some sort of diagnosis as to the causes for the apnea, and how best to treat it, seems wrong.

Anyone know whether these guys are required to refer to a sleep lab when patient presents with apnea symptoms?

Dental appliances are a good option for some, they can be used either alone or with CPAP.
It's a real shame if this becomes a "battle" between warring commercial interests. The patients will be the losers.
The two specialties need to learn to work together. All too often a practitioner of one type of therapy will know little about other options for the problems he runs across and will push the solution he is trained in to the exclusion of all others, even if they might be more effective.
