Sinus Irrigators

Post by racefan » Sun Dec 07, 2008 2:15 pm

I have been using a Neilmed bottle for rinsing my sinuses.I'm kinda looking at Sinus Irrigators. There are several brands available, does anyone have a preference as to which one they prefer? Also has anyone had any luck with getting their ENT Dr. to write a script for one?

mu copay would cost more than the otc nettipot and 50 bags of salt.

I tried the Grossan and ended up returning it. I felt if caused irritation. I think you are better off with the non-automated systems. Just irrigate morning and night and it should do he trick. The Neilmed bottle (or sinucleanse netipot) with the packets of saline does the trick in clearing the area. I've been doing this for a few years now. CVS even sells their own brand of the saline packets and its much cheaper.

I have been using a Waterpik for years. You can get a nasal attachment. Also, I make my own solution (2 tsp salt in a quart bottle of boiled water). Works great!

I'm on the same plan as Jere. I mix my own saline (and I use the Grossan Waterpik attachment).

Over time, I figured out that too high of a concentration of salt, or too low of a concentration of salt, is not nearly as comfortable as getting it right. Same thing with water temperature. Gotta do the Goldilocks thing and figure out what is just right.

I use the Grossan HydroPulse too. I was turned onto HydroPulse by good folks on this forum like Jere, James Skinner, and others. I have not had the cold or flu in more than 2 and a half years and I think regular saline sinus rinses may be the main reason.

The bulb and nettie pot will work too but the HydroPulse provides a really nice sinus massage ... I actually look forward to doing the rinse.

Salt is cheap (35 cents worth lasts about a year) ... just make sure to use the one without Iodine (I use Morton brand from local grocer). For making your own saline solution, I use about half teaspoon of salt to one pint of warm water. I prefer a "hyper-saline" mix ... I use just enough salt that it does not irritate the sinus membranes. Basically, if you don't use enough salt, it will irritate your sinuses and if you use too much it will also irritate. Everyone is different so you just need to experiment with how much salt you need for your own mix.
