New here - Newly diagnososed - Brief Introduction

Post by Cyngen » Tue Aug 02, 2005 10:03 am

Hi,

Just found this board a week or so ago and have been reading as much as I can.

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have my sleep test (or should I say no sleep test) on June 29. Being wired up like I was I did manage to get about 30 minutes of sleep in which the doctor said I had 28 events.

I have a followup consultation to go over the sleep test in detail in a few weeks. However, he did prescripe a cpap for me ahead of that.

I have the mixed feeling I'm darth vader or the victim of one of the face sucking aliens from the movie Aliens with the mask on.

After about a week with the cpap, I found I've had about 60% good nights where I sleep very well and wake up feeling somewhat human again. Other nites, I seem to wake up, take a bio break and then glare at the mask as I roll over to sleep without it... seems I have some getting used to this thing to do yet.

Hi Cyngen,
Welcome!!! Keep reading the advice on the Board especially about what masks work and why. There are so many different masks and machines out there...you should be able to find one that works best for you. I've tried about 8 different mask so far and have settled on the Activa. I'm still going to investigate the Swift because it's gotten alot of favorable comments and I like the idea of not having so much "stuff" on my face. In the meantime, the Acitva works well enough for me.
Feel free to ask questions as they arise. You'll almost always get some good advice.
Keep us updated on your progress....Amy

Hi Cyngen and welcome.

It will probably take a while to get used to the darn contraption on your face!

Someone on the site mentioned that their doc said "Don't do that!" about taking off the mask during the night (the person was doing it without even knowing it) And it worked!

What mask are you using? And what machine at what setting?

As Yawn mentioned. you may need to try various masks before you find the one that is right for you!

Hang in there and keep trying.

Hi Cyngen,
Welcome!
...and try not to sleep without you mask. Outglare it, tell it that if it won't behave itself you'll leave the bedroom and do something else - that's hard in the beginning, but try. Convince yourself that "sleeping without the mask is not an option".

It takes time.

I think you're doing very well. It took me much more than a week to get to where you are.

This board will be your new best friend. You'll learn so much, and somebody here will likely have an answer to any question you might come up with.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome and Charles that it is exactly!!!

When I get home tonite from the office, I'll dig up the equipment I have. I know the cpap is able to run on battery as I asked for that for the motorcycle camping trips I'll be taking.

Welcome Cyngen,

This board will indeed be your best friend.

Ozij is right on. Refuse to sleep without it. Keep trying. It is ok to sleep for awhile and then take it off, and sleep for a little bit without it, but then keep going back to it. You will eventually use it more and more.

Try to idenify any problems you have and then look here for answers.

Welcome Cyngen,

You chose wisely in joining in here. Great team.
