AEIOMed aura and APAP

Post by TravisTX » Sun Jul 31, 2005 2:10 pm

I've been using a ComfortCurve mask for a while and find that I have to keep it fairly tight to get a good seal. That causes my nose to be sore every morning, so I decided to try something different.

I opened the package for my new aura nasal interface and started reading the instructions. Everything looked good until I got to page 9. Under "Warnings and Precautions" I was disappointed to read:
The auraTM CPAP Patient Interface should not be used with auto-titrating CPAP machines.

Not good, since I use a REMstar Auto with C-Flex.

Does anyone have any experience with this mask and APAP? Why is it not recommended?

Thanks,
Disappointed in Houston

You just made my day (NOT) I've just ordered an Aura to use with my resmed auto. However, there was a thread the other day that talked about just this. It said that some rep or other had said that no nasal mask was suitable for autopap. Then, everyone with a nasal mask and autopap wrote on the thread to say that they were having no problems whatsoever with auto and their mask. I am pretty sure that RestedGal uses the aura and an auto without any problems whatsoever - send her a message and I think she will confirm.

My advice would be to ignore it and use the Aura and see how you go! The pressures might be a little different, but it probably will be just fine - I am expecting to have no problems with mine when it arrives.

AND!!! The company that designed the aura was started be the man who was in charge of the breeze design team (so I am told) - so I like to think of the aura as 'son of breeze'. The breeze works fine with autopap!! AND ... I checked with aoimed the other day and they hope to have an auto out next year sometime, and I bet they don't intend to change their mask!

I suspect that what's going on is what we call in the uk a CMA statement (CMA = Cover My A..) fill in the blank yourself.

Of course I could always be completely and utterly wrong!!

Check out this thread. That warning/precaution may be debunked.

Thanks for the info. I'll just have to try it myself.

That would be my non-doctorly advice too...same as Sir_C.

There could very well be some people whose breathing patterns could be misread by one autopap but read fine by another, or misread by any autopap, depending on what mask they were wearing -- expecially when it comes to the narrow diameter hose masks. Not an issue at all, I don't think, with the PB 420E machines regarding narrow diameter hoses since the Breeze and 420E are "made" for each other. I do think most people can wear any mask they happen to like, with any autopap -- and get good treatment.

Given how important finding a comfortable mask is to getting treatment at all, I'd not worry about the "warning". I'd give any mask a try with whatever autopap I was using, to see how I felt the next day. And I wouldn't get concerned if the data showed extra tick marks as long as the machine was behaving reasonably well (not running up to the top pressure when it usually doesn't do that) and was giving me good treatment. Nor would I worry if some masks made the data show up with a slightly higher AHI, as long as it was reasonably low (5 or under for the AHI.)

I've used both the Breeze and the Aura (and briefly the Swift) with all three major brands of autopap - no problem for me with any of the mix and match combos. I've been using my chopped down Aura and Respironics REMstar Auto with C-flex for quite a few months now. Getting good sleep, as usual.

I can't say how it will work for others, but I use the aura/REMstar Auto combo with fantastic success!

I use both the Aura, and the Activa alternately, and the daily reports from encore are about the same with either mask.
