Tremors upon arousal

Post by ehreesejr » Sun Oct 26, 2008 10:18 am

Has anyone experienced tremors upon arousals? My tremors seem to be in my arm and upper body a sort of shivering ( not temperature related). What might cause this? Last night I had this happen twice . My numbers for the night were AHI 8.4,AI 0.8 ,pressure 12.2, leakage 0.02l/s As read from efficacy led screens( 6 hours duration of session). My pressure setting is a range of 5 to 20 on the ResMed S8 vantage and F&P 431 full mask

Something doesn't seem right there. I have the same machine, and I've NEVER had an HI over 4.5. Your AI looks good though. I am assuming your HI is 7.6 since you didn't post it. I took your total AHI and subtracted your AI to come up with that number.

I know Resmed machines record a higher HI than other machines and is usually disregarded, but your total AHI is high. Your total AHI should not be over 5. The fact that you have unexplainable tremors should lead you to your doctor ASAP to make sure it isn't something serious.

I think I wuold see your primary care physician ASAP, if you feel its something serious, you might even go to the ER.
Does your pcp or insurance have a nurse line to call?? Id at the very minimum go to webmd and read up on it.

Treesap And Boston
Thanks for your response. The AHI is always the sum of the AI andHI. I tend to ignore the HI's because I am sure that most of them are artifacts of shallow breathing and the response time of the machine to large pressure change demands. I do not always have these tremors but I would like to know if anyone ever experiences them. Other than that I feel fine and have no residual effects during the day. I will tell my Doctor abvout the experiences.
Thanks again,
Ed

Whenever I wake up feeling somewhat refreshed, I always have mild tremors that seem to go along with it. That being said, I don't sleep well most nights, so it usually isn't an issue.

I'm glad you brought this up, was wondering the same thing myself.

I have the same machine, and my AHIs where similar to yours when I used a full face mask. I recently switched from the ffm to a Mirage Swift II, and my AHI's went down dramatically.

Thanks for the repliesfrom CRS and allinknots.
CRS-That's a good point that I overlooked i.e., I did actually feel refreshed at the time.
Allinknots-With respect to the mask: I use the F&P 431 full mask with the foam insert that they use in the 432 mask.
I have tried the opus nose pillows with a ruby chin strap and the resmed liberty mask. However, I mouth breathe and have a deviated septum so only the full mask is effective.

Ed, while we're tracking correlations here, I also mouth breathe, have sinus obstructions, and can only use FF masks too.

It's happened to me a few times. I chalked it up to having woke up in the middle of an adrenelin surge. The heart felt like it was racing, almost like a panic attack, like I was vibrating all over. I figured that mayabe I had woke up in REM sleep just after a vivid dream or maybe had an apnea. The REM explanation may explain the way it seems to coincide with feeling refreshed.

I think the first several months on PAP therapy can be a time for the body to adapt to the therapy, especially the hormone system, so maybe it can happen for no real reason at all. It hasn't happened to me for the last month or so.

But if it continues, it can't hurt to mention it to a doc.

Thanks jnk,
The connection to REM might explain the refreshed feeling. My heart did not seem to be racing. The tremor feeling was mainly in the arms and upper body and only persisted for about a minute or two. I would have noticed the racing heart since I have had Atrial Fibrillation ( returned to sinous rythm by cardioversion in August). In fact I am on cpap becase the probability of a relapse to AFIB is much higer for untreated apnea sufferers.
Thanks again,
Ed

Hmmm. Interesting . . .
" . . . vibration sensation when waking from sleep. . .

". . . the commonest cause of such symptoms is a heightened awareness of and sensitivity to the environment arising from stress and anxiety. . . ."

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/neuro/archive/733.html
The fluttering sensation in your chest is probably Premature Atrial or Ventricular Contractions (PACs and PVCs). These are quite normal and common with or without heart disease, and can be provoked or aggravated by caffeine, nicotine, Anxiety, stress, sleep deprivation, inhalation of noxious fumes, etc. The list is quite long, and sometimes there is no apparent reason for them.

Jnk,
Thanks for the references. I checked them out. I have not had a recurrrance and I think the anxiety connection my be part of the explanation for the recent experience.
Thanks again,
Ed
