Card Read Failure
Card Read Failure

I have been using Encore Pro since 2005. Upgraded to 1.6.22 when I got an M series as my travel machine. Last week I went to do my monthly download (I use 4 cards) and I get errors. "Reader not detected" or "Can't connect to the device" Services show smartcard reader not started, when I click "start" I get "error 5: access is denied" Any clues?
Tried:
Remove/reinstall encore pro, reader software, reboots, etc. Bought new reader. Have I a lost folder permission somewhere? My IT admin has been known to mess with permissions. Win XP SP3

I see several possibilities to the problems......mrhyak wrote:I have been using Encore Pro since 2005. Upgraded to 1.6.22 when I got an M series as my travel machine. Which M Series machine do you have?
Have you ever gotten a successful download since you upgraded to 1.6.22?
Have you ever gotten a successful download since you upgraded to Win XP SP3?
Make sure your SQL database is running in the "Service Manager"......if the "arrow" in the icon is red, it's not running.
Make sure your card reader is not plugged into a hub.

I think EncorePro for M-Series has to be 1.8x.....

Re: Card Read Failure
Wulfman!
I have a M series Apap
Everything had/has been working. No Hubs. I always use same USB port, wrote it on connector. I know the routine, but can't seem to connect to card anymore after all working for months.
Services show SQL db as "started", Smartcard in automatic, but not started. If i boot with reader plugged in, I get green light, but still no worky. Otherwise light never goes green as normal when you start a read. EncorePro goes to extracting data window, then after 10 secs or so responds with "Can't connect to device"
If I try to manually start SCardSvc, (using services.msc "Smart Card","Start") I get "Error 5: Access is denied"
Tried regedt32, deleted security key, still get error 5
Any more ideas? I must be missing something.

Re: Card Read Failure
You didn't answer my question about Service Pack 3.......but if that was installed recently, you might want to uninstall it and then try it. I seem to recall someone mentioning that their SP3 "broke" things. Personally, I haven't installed SP3.....heard too many horror stories.mrhyak wrote:Wulfman!

Re: Card Read Failure
SP3 - Hmmm?? would have been done by my IT guy, can't say when it was installed, but it's possible that it's the problem. Is there a log somewhere on the machine as to when it was installed? I'll start looking.

for the newer Aflex apap it needs to be 1.8 but for the older cflex apap m series 1.6 will do as long as it's XP and not Vista
Re: Card Read Failure
I have an older cflex, not aflex unit, and every thing was working fine as of last download, 10/7/2008. I'm trying to figure out when SP3 was installed, but no luck so far.
Re: Card Read Failure
Aha - thanks, Jules - good to have more accurate info!

Re: Card Read Failure
This probably isn't relevant ... I've had trouble reading the Smartcard a couple of times when the contacts on the card needed cleaning. I don't, however, recall the green light coming on.

Re: Card Read Failure
To check it out or remove it (SP3), you need to go to "Control Panel", then to "Add or Remove Programs". It won't tell you WHEN it was installed, but you can remove it by highlighting it and then select "Remove". It will revert back to Service Pack 2 when it's uninstalled. (I had to uninstall it from two of our computers about a week ago because SOMEBODY updated them without my knowledge)

Re: Card Read Failure
Thanks, Den
I just rattled my IT guy's tilt phone with an e-mail, he has kept me and my computer messed up all day, between my card reader problems and his update of Kerio which has crashed my e-mail, leaving me stuck with web mail. I'm ready to make him fix it and call it a day. I'll post whatever the resolution was, especially if it was SP3. (assuming he gets it running, grrrrrr!) I'm not sure I want to ditch SP3, only to find a bigger can of worms because of other updates he has done!

Re: Card Read Failure
Also, sorry if I was rude, thank you Mindy and Jules. I have been using Encore Pro and jskinners Encore Pro Analyzer for so long I take for granted it will work. My first thought when it didn't work this time was to blame the hardware, so I bought a new reader. I hate messing with software, even if I've had to write my share. Windows is so monstrous it's a wonder anything works. Makes you want to go back to cpm and msbasic (8k) (oops, my age is showing!)

Re: Card Read Failure
My recommendation would be to go into 'Device manager' and remove the driver. Then plug in the Smartcard and let the OS reinstall the driver. See if that helps any. If not PM me.

Re: Card Read Failure
I seem to remember reading something about SP3 doing in Encore too. If it's a Co. machine youWulfman wrote:You didn't answer my question about Service Pack 3.......but if that was installed recently, you might want to uninstall it and then try it.
