Wife is having rain out issues but i'm not

Post by john44077 » Sun Oct 05, 2008 7:46 pm

Hi everyone. I have been on CPap 13cm for over a year. I have not had rain out issues since last March when i started out. My wife started cpap a week ago. She has a Respironics M series (basic basic basic model) with a heated humidifier unit. Her mask is a Fisher/Paykel HC406 mask. Her setting is 13cm also. We think that is a mistake. Wife says its way to strong. We are having issues getting a copy of her sleep study. Anyway. She is having rain out issues. Humid is at 1. I am not having any rain out (room temp is around 62 at night) but she is. I have a Resmed S8 i think. Out machines are both at a 1 on the humid settings. Same level next to the bed. I have a long hose (10ft?) that goes down to the floor and back up vs her short one. The DME said we have to pay for a new/longer hose or wait till next month when the insurance will pay 100% since we are maxed out now out of pocket. Any ideas? We are thinking about letting her use my auto machine for a night or two so we can see what the machine says her pressure is.

You don't say which mask you are using but $1 says your mask is different.

Yes her mask is different. She has a Fisher/Paykel HC406 mask.

Having had a ResMed machine and a Resp. "M" I can vouch that the 1 HH range on the "M"is equivolent to about a 3 or 4 on the ResMed. Have her turn the HH off and see what happens. I use fleece covers on all my hoses and I have never in two years had a rainout. (knocks on wood) jim

can be many reasons, some people can exhale more moisture than others sorta like rebreathing in a gallon ziplock bag, hers may condense up and yours not.

The heater on the humidifier is not to warm the incoming air it is to warm the water, the warmer the water the more water is evaporated from the tank and into the CPAP flow. You would have to use a digital thermometer to compare if water temp is the same.

But if your wife wants the warmth but less moisture she will need to turn the humidifier completely off and use a heated hose. Heated hose warms the incoming air and can make it much more comfortable. We all have different tolerances to what is cool and what is warm. If the incoming air is too cool for her it can be very uncomfortable.

It is much cheaper buying a heated hose than turning the room thermostat up.
