Health care and the web

Post by mindy » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:54 am

Hi all,

Here's an article from the on-line New York Times I found very useful

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/30/healt ... ?th&emc=th

Although it's not about sleep apnea specifically, it does discuss the evolution in "patients" as consumers and how at least some docs welcome the collaborative approach. We can only hope that many of our sleep docs (and RTs and DMEs) catch on and embrace this trend instead of fighting it.

Somewhere there it should give you an opportunity to create a free login (you may need to click on an article first). I get it delivered to my InBox everyday.

The new relationship likely brought about as a result of the Internet becoming as common in homes as the TV did years ago.

The only thing... some Doctors hate hearing a patient nattering on about what they read on the 'net -and- one must read careful the information on the net and consider the credibility of the source before assuming it is the gospel.

Near the top right of the screen is a button that says "Register".

I agree that we need to read and carefully and consider info from the net, yet the same is also true of any other source. The web has made it possible to locate more info and to network (as we do here) with others with some of the same issues. There can be great value associated with the many, varied experiences as long as one uses common sense.

I've certainly learned much more here than I ever have from my sleep tech, doc, and RT combined!
