Acronyms

Post by enzoweb » Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:20 am

I'm a newbie to CPAP and this forum, and reading through I've come across a lot of acronyms.

I'm in IT (Information Technology), and we're not averse to using them either, but the world of CPAP (oops, there's another one) seems to be full of them.

Some are easy to guess, others not so much. Also, I'm in Australia and I think a lot of the acronyms are common medical ones in the US but not for us overseas.

Is there a definitive list anywhere? Might be an idea for the "Our Wisdom" section.

Thanks.

You'll find links to the acronyms right above the first post in each thread.
I'm adding a few:
AHI
RDI
REM
DME (very local, that one...)
BIPAP
APAP

And you'll find a great glossary here too http://www.sandmansleep.com/resources/glossary.cfm

I've been in the IT bus' for 25 years.

I'll bet you thought PCMCIA stood for:
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association

When in fact it stands for:
People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms

....just another undocumented computer fact.

Be patient, just like computer acronyms, you'll get the
cpap acronyms, too.

My favorite, undocumented computer acronym was that Damn Invisible Plastic switch.....

One of my favorite true computer stories was back in the mid 80's when desktop computers were a novelty. I was in the math department, but we were often called upon to assist in the week-end computer seminars that we very popular with the public. We taught the "very basics" of computers, long before Windows and servers came along. We had to use the old floppy disks, which had to be formatted and so forth.

Well, on one occasion the instructor gave the command: "Now, class, type R U N" so the program would then start. Well, one person raised his hand and said, "Mine won't work." After repeated attempts, and at the urging of those around him he said he put it in exactly as commanded. Well, I went over and looked at his computer. It said
ARE YOU IN?

Cheers,
Jay

I absolutely love it!!!

I can relate to that one. I went back to college later in life and took my first computer class (required to get a teaching degree) kicking and screaming!! I did NOT want to do this!! At the time I was 40 and the oldest in the class. The first day of class the instructor told us to turn on our computers. I searched high and low and couldn't figure out how that was suppose to happen. He started to move on and I am the only one staring at a dark screen. I finally get my nerve up and asked him what I needed to do. He told me turn the power on and of course I had to ask how to do that and finally where the power button was. I had everyone rolling in the floor laughing -- except for me and I was wishing the floor could swallow me up!!

Watch the top of very post. You'll see the CPAPopedia Keywords that will show you pertinent acronyms for the post.

I hope this helps.

Computers are just like men, you have to turn them on to get them to do anything.
