Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
I'm in the Dallas Fort Worth area, and we're just supposed to get alot of rain and winds in the 20 mph range. I'm delivering a grooms cake to a wedding at Carswell AFB this afternoon and staying for the wedding. I wish I could just hunker down at home. The wedding was intially supposed to be outdoors, but after the reports they changed the location. I just hope things are calm enough that it goes well.

No, that is not the case. One of your fellow Texans previously posted an image of the "FEMA GOLD'N TICKET" (thanks for the laugh, I had never seen the ticket).JZ wrote:dadgummit, Tomjax,

TomJax was only responding to the wrench already thrown in.

Limited update on Houston
For those interested, I have a couple of family members that live in Northwest Houston. Here's the update from them as of this posting:
the bad news:
1. Damage is extensive in their area
2. Main problem is power lines/loss of electricity and trees down (one sister has a tree through the roof, a knocked down chimney and partial loss of the roof the tree didn't get). Power went out very early on (about 2:30 AM). Not expected on for "quite a while".
3. Cell phones are spotty, but land lines OK (go figure). It may be that the cell system is just overwhelmed.
4. Doubt there is any way get out of town for at least a day or two.
5. Several fires, and no one can get to them. But it was raining like hell.
the good news:
there's a cold front on the way, so the next few days will be bearable without A/C
This is just what my family has reported in their immediate area. Evidently, downtown took it on the chin.

Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
Thanks Babs for posting this thread. I am obviously so disconnected from the news that I didn't even know there was a threat going on. And Jerry, best of luck and my prayers for your and everyone's safety there. I can just see you lassoing your house.6PtStar wrote:I am about 100 miles North of Houston and the projection is for the eye to cross directly overhead and still get 75/80 MPH winds and 6 to 8 inches of rain. I have a feeling I am going to get to see if my emergency power is going to work. All batteries on charge at this time. Threw a rope over the house in hopes to keep the roof on!!

Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
Thanks, Babette. I hope everyone is safe and sound or will be soon. My thoughts are with all of you Texans as you handle all the damage from this monster storm. I lived in Houston for a year and remember the damage done by a single flash flood. I can't even imagine what you are facing now in damage.

Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
Thanks to Babs for starting this thread. My thoughts are with all of our Texas contingent in the affected areas. I saw some footage from Galveston and it looked bad. I've been in Houston once and it's hard to imagine the effects of Ike.
Best of luck!
Mindy

Tim!! Were you raised in Juniata County, Pennsylvania? I thought only native Juniata Countians said "youans."
To anybody...... Other than Johnny & Co., Danny Ph, 6PtStar and profish (hope I didn't miss anyone listed in this thread), who else of our group is/was in Ike's path? Where?
To those who've been "visited" by Ike........ I'd like to second (third, fourth, whatever) the motion for ALL of you to check in here when you can. Long discussions not required. We know you'll be busy with cleanup. Just let us know you're okay.

Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
Hi All!! Well I got lucky! Middle of the day yesterday the forcast was for the track of Ike to go right over my house but looks like it went about 60 miles east. We still got some wind. One report said that we got winds around 45 MPH with gusts in excess of 60MPH. They hit us around 6:30 A.M. this morning. Got some hard rain. My rain gague is only showing around a little over 3" but with the hard rains I suspect a lot of it blew over it and did not go in the measurment tube. Weather report says we are still going to get around 2 more inches of rain. Wind is down to gusts around 20/25. I got my wind meter and went out and tried to measure it and it showed 5 to 23 MPH. Did not stay long as it was still raining. Have not seen much damage except for tree limbs down. I have three or four to take care of when the rain quits. Lost power for a very short time, actually before I hooked up to the hose. Did not have to try the barrery and generator. Strange, we lost phone service last night and it is still completely dead but my broadband Internet service is back up, just not the phones. Phone company said they might be able to check it next Tuesday. I think I will try to charge my cell phone up. I don't think my wife can stand not talking to her mother, two sisters and my daughter for three days.
Thanks goes out to all of you that offered up your prayers for all of us down in Texas. I can assure you it did a lot of good in my case!
Hope everyone was as lucky as I was but i suspect Galvestion and Houston will need help for a while yet!!!!!!!!!!
Jerry

It's an Ulster-Scots/Scots-Irish/Scotch-Irish thing, I believe, and is common in Midland-Appalachia areas, such as where I grew up in eastern Kentucky too. Every time I hear the word it's like a breath of fresh air from home.
The possessive pronouns are the most entertaining part of the dialect, though: "Now, that one's mine, that one's his'n, but this'n's your'n [pronounced 'urine'].""In fact, if you go to Ulster in northern Ireland today, you will hear people say you’ns,” explained [John Holmes of the Franciscan University of Steubenville].
We may think that a particular word is unique to this immediate area but it can be found as far south as the northern part of South Carolina and as far north as Erie."

Re: OT: GOOD LUCK TEXANS!
I, too, wish everyone a safe journey through the storm.
My hubby was lucky in that he was working in the path of the storm but was moved to a job in New York a few weeks ago. He grumbled about being moved (his biggest compliant has been the prices in the NY area). Now he is really glad that he was sent!!
I will take tornado season anyday over a hurricane. At least a tornado is quick and although the devastation can be mighty hurricanes are worse.
