"No naps" recommendation?

Post by wireless » Sat Sep 13, 2008 12:42 am

I've always heard that naps were so great, sort of like getting twice as much effectiveness out of your time, if you take them in the afternoon and it's not too long and so on.

But my sleep doc says I absolutely shouldn't nap. Maybe he only says this for people who have trouble falling asleep and/or staying on a schedule.

I was wondering if that is good or bad advice from the doc, and how it fits with the typical consensus that naps are extremely healthy. What factors would I need to consider regarding whether or not I should nap?

It seems erroneous to me to say that in general a nap is what throws off my schedule. Sure, it seems logical, but I think that my schedule would be terrible even if I didn't nap ever. Also I feel like sometimes the nap is the only thing that keeps me having half the energy that I do have. Without, wouldn't quality of life suffer?

Or, in other words, it seems like on some days, the nap is where I actually get restorative sleep like REM or the type where my body physically heals.
Need to restart BiPAP therapy, never got adjusted enough. ResMed VPAP Auto with H3i humidifier, Mirage Quattro Full Face mask, ResScan 3.5. On paper, my Dx is OSAS, but it's probably UARS. Reduced amount of REM. Titrated at very low I/E pressures.

Perhaps, as you say, he's making that recommendation (no naps) specifically for you. Presumably because of other sleep issues you may have.

When you take a nap, you do use your machine, I hope? You use it even for naps...right?

That site says: "If you nap, only nap early in the day, not in the late afternoon or evening."
