a new trick, a little fun

Post by Ren » Sat Sep 06, 2008 8:35 am

Ever been walking along and you are so tired you just want to close your eyes? Of course you have! But you are afraid you'll walk into something, right? I've found a trick to deal with this. Others may know this already, but its new to me

Close just one eye! I feel like I'm tricking my brain into thinking I'm sleeping, but I can still see where I'm going. After a while, I switch eyes, and my brain is none the wiser.

Oh, I strongly recommend mirrored sunglasses so people around don't think you are:
a) hitting on them
b) an escaped psychiatric patient

Above all, resist the temptation to close both eyes! Just asking for trouble if you do!

Anyway, hope this helps you all feel better today

Hey, Ren, that avatar of yours really is a photo of you, isn't it?
(I love your postings; always look forward to seeing your name in the list.)
(You might want to think about scheduleing an appointment with your doc for a med check.)

Unfortunately, I bear more of a physical resemblance to Stimpy...

I go next week for 3rd PSG and MSLT. It's not all adding up; I have good compliance, leak rate seems normal, AHI around 1.5, but I'm constantly sleepy to the point that my eyes hurt and I actually do use the trick I described...

Ok, so I got a link to the screencap, how would I get the jpg to actually show in the body of the message? Thanks.

Hey Ren,

It wouldn't help me cause I'm near blind in one eye. Actually, I guess I could do it as long as I closed the right eye...oh, but now I'm so forgetful!

Think I figured it out. I can't get photos from Flickr to post directly, so I opened photobucket account.

Consider asking your doc about allergies. I have the same symptoms w/AHI <.3 - pretty much narrowed it down to dust allergy.

Never had these problems until I quit smoking and started sucking on filtered air all nite long. I just don't know what to do about it.

Does smoking really keep allergies at bay? It must!!!

Another thing that could be disrupting your sleep is PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder). It's similar to Restless Leg Syndrome, but the occurrences are only during sleep. Yet another thing that we'd have no awareness of, except that it pulls us out of sleep enough to break the cycle, but usually not so much that we're aware of it.

When I was first referred to my sleep doc, he said I didn't "present" with the "usual" symptoms of sleep apnea, so his orders for my first PSG were for a wider study than just looking for sleep apnea. It turned out that I had SA, PLMD and RLS (I was already sure I had that). He started me on Mirapex, the RLS "crazylegs" went away a day or so later, and I felt marginally better after sleeping. My titration study showed that the PLMD was no longer waking me. Since you're already scheduled for PSG/MSLT, I think you'd be wise to check ahead of time and make sure your doc includes wiring you to check for PLMD and RLS in his orders. There's an extensive discussion about PLMD in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34322&p=292997&hilit=+RLS#p292997. For more about RLS, see http://www.rls.org. Here's a good discussion about PLMD and RLS: http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.com/rls/index.shtml

I hope they figure out why you're still having trouble sooooooon.
