resmed um2 nasal mask and resmed s8 users

Post by reducha » Sat Sep 06, 2008 9:05 pm

Hey everyone! I"m looking for others that have used their Resmed S8 autopap in conjunction with a ultra mirage full face mask,,and then switched to a resmed ultra mirage 2 nasal mask.
My nighly readings/numbers for leak, ahi,hi,ai seem fairly normal with the full face,,,,change to the resmed um2 nasal mask,,and the numbers/readings are off the chart. The mask fit feature shows"excellent" on nasal mask,,but the numbers are HUGE! Leak rates in the 1.16,,ahi,,hi, in the 22 range???? With the full face,,,leaks were below .3 with full face and accordingly all the other numbers were low. anyone else experience this?? What does it all mean??? thanks Tim

Did you change your mask selection in the machine configuration?
Beyond that, it could be mouth-leaking. Are you taping or sealing your mouth in some way?

Yup, what Wulfman said. One, the other or both are the culprit.

Yup! Changed settings for mask, and tape on mouth. Every time i've ever experimented with changing masks , from full face, to resmed's um2 nasal or comfort gel nasal mask,,the numbers are always off the chart. Has no one every experenced this same problem?? thanks..tim

I was intrigued by reducha's report, since there are some parallels with my own experience. Unfortunately, the differing leak experience he describes between masks make his situation harder to evaluate.

I haven't collected quite enough data yet to be willing to post details, but my preliminary analysis shows significantly better index numbers when I use the UMFF, as compared to my use of the Mirage Activa. The only difference in machine settings is letting the S8 know which mask I am using. The other difference is use of mouth taping with the Activa, and of course none with the UMFF. Leak is negligible with either mask. The major question is: do the apparent difference in numbers reflect actual changes in my breathing patterns (I feel no differently), or do they reflect non-physiological changes in sensor readings at the machine end of the hose (perhaps resulting from differing mask characteristics)?

I will post more when I have data of sufficient quality.
