Please do not pelt me with rotten red fruit--here goes:
I have noticed that in the new forum format, many folks are quoting entire large posts--repeatedly. This seems to happen even if the post to which the new post refers is directly above it. Now, if it is just me who finds this to be a bit of a bother to wade through so many copies of the same post, then I'll gladly just go ahead and browse quickly.
There are, of course, the posts which quote the ones who quoted the first one, and the one who quoted that one...it reminds me of my Tommee Tippee cup when I was a kid (actually, probably more when my younger brother inherited it). Tommee was holding a cup with a picture of himself, and that cup had a picture of him, and the cup being held ad infinitum had a picture of Tommee Tippee holding a cup with a picture of himself. (What a way to internalize the concept of infinity! And, they just don't make those kind of cups anymore at the Tommee Tippee company.)
So much quoting just seems to be an obstacle and a sheer waste of space to me. Quoted posts can be edited to include just the relevant parts. I also appreciate the repetition of a post that was on a previous page or another thread as it may be a bit tricky to find it.
I wonder if this type of quoting repetitively is bothering some of our new people? Or, is it annoying older forum folk? Please weigh in, as I'm only one person and I may be off-track on this issue!
Thanks,
Karen,

Personally, I prefer that people quote so that I know what they are responding to. But I also prefer that they pare down the quote to just the context they need, if that's practical.
On another quote topic, I've seen a number of posts in various threads where someone has quoted someone else, but that's all there is to the post. The post seems to be "cut off" at the bottom. Has anyone else noticed this problem? It appears to be a software glitch.

I agree with Birdshell, and also, have wondered about this as well:

This has happened to me several times, the quote is there, but nothing that I said appeared. I noticed that someone else mentioned this in another thread as well...

In the old days, before HTML posting, if we needed to quote, we would copy pertenent words and bracket them like this:
>So much quoting just seems to be an obstacle and a sheer waste of space to me.<
If knowing who you are quoting was important just precede their name with a @ like:
@dog >This is your quote.< Here is my answer or...

You can always copy the relevant lines, paste them in your reply, and click on the quote button above the reply frame to have them quoted.
If the name is important, you can add ="their name" to the first quote code. If you drop one of the inverted commas, it won't work: [quote="OldLincoln]. Make sure you use inverted commas on both sides of the name, and no spaces outside those commas.
Thanks for bringing this up, Birdshell.

Well, we are all guilty of doing this quoting, and quoting and quoting thing in the past, the present and more than likely in the future, I don't necessarily like to do that but sometimes I use the quote button so that I won't forget what I was going to type in or the user name.... Now some of those long quote's, well that's another story and I am guilty of doing that to...

I have no doubt many of us do it for that reason. I do too. Some of us edit out the irrelevant stuff in the quote before we submit the message.

Me too... I'm guilty of having placed a few posts with too much quoted. But generally I try to minimize quotes to pertinent information.
Yep... I agree... superfluous info to great bulk in quotes is a bit much.
But, too, I waste space with my signature "tools box" jpeg. Though, I do think that the "tools box" may serve to prompt thought in some newbies, and other less successful in finding their treatment sweet-spot, to the possibilities for sustaining their health, lives and longevity. Plus, it reminds me how fortunate I am to have what I need in order to counter OSA's detrimental impact and lasting negative effects.

I've noticed that on a couple of your posts, jsmythe, but I can't find an example.
If you could find an example:
- 'edit' your post, copy your entire reply from the editable field including the quotes and then,
- come back to this thread and create a new reply. (You don't have to save your edits on the old post.)
- Before pasting in the stuff you just copied, click 'Code' in the bar above the editable text area.
Within the 'code'- '/code' brackets, paste your previous entry.
- Post
It should look something like this when you're done:
Code: Select all
[quote="jsmythe"]...This has happened to me several times, the quote is there, but nothing that I said appeared. I noticed that someone else mentioned this in another thread as well...[/quote]

This will allow us to view your post un-rendered by the bbcode render engine. If we can't find a problem with your un-rendered post, chances are there is something wonky with the way the forum software is rendering bbcode.

I have to question if we need all these big assed graphics as signature lines in every post, in fact some people get carried away using text. Not only does it look ugly, it makes for much harder reading and a hellva lot more scrolling, I have no idea who these people are trying to impress with that ugly crap.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Uh, Folks, now that we've "fixed" the quote thing, about those 3 inch signatures.....
