Advice? Sleep Apnea and Type 2 Diabetes

Post by mermcks » Wed Aug 20, 2008 6:00 pm

I have recently been diagnosed with OSA and would like to know if this would have contributed to the development of my Type 2 Diabetes?

I believe that I had undiagnosed Gestational Diabetes with my son. (he is now almost 17) My obstetrician was only concerned with my high blood pressure during the pregnancy and did not test for Gestational Diabetes. However my son was born 4 weeks early, weighed 8lb 9oz and had respitory distress, severe jaundice and was very lethargic for the first few days of his life. He ended up in the neonatal care unit and this is where the nursing staff asked me if I had Gestational Diabetes. I said I didn't know and was only being treated for the high blood pressure. I also had High blood pressure with my first pregnancy which was twins girls.

After my son's birth I endured the usual sleep deprivation that most mothers with 3 young children under 4 have. I was always tired and lethargic and therefore not inclined to exercise (which I always tried to do before having kids). I slowly gained weight
and was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2000 when my son was 9. I have been treated with oral medication ever since.

In the last 8 years my weight has kept increasing and I am now obese. My doctors tell me continually that I need to lose weight which of course is stating the obvious, but not so easy when you feel constantly tired and have no energy! I now wonder if having OSA has contributed to my situation. I have also observed over the years that my blood glucose levels are high when I take my first readings in the morning. I suspect that my OSA has affected these readings and has contibuted to a vicious cycle.

I would like to know if anyone else has been in this situation or similiar and is there hope for any improvement in my diabetes control with the treatment of my OSA with CPAP?

Odds are Sleep Apnea didn't cause Diabetes, however it may have damaged all parts of your body. What's needed is to take agressive action to control both. I personally took oral meds for type 2, they didn't do the job and I'm paying dearly for it. Diabetes need to be delt with in a serious fashion, a pill is a easy choice but monitoring is the key. If we watched what and how much we eat we would all be better off, it's too easy to let it slide, and pay later. Jim

This just came out today, theory is bad water contributes to it:

You can thank our EPA for putting in place those stringent standards for drinking water.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I'm type 2 diabetic, have been for about 12 yrs, I started with pills, but since 2000, I've been on insulin, All I can say is, since I've been on CPAP therapy (about a month now) my blood sugar numbers have gotten Way better! I don't understand it? but it's the only big change I've had in my life recently, so it must be helping. I'm still waiting for confirmation, or not, from other members here if they've experienced any benefits like this? or not?
