I've also read that the urine increase is because since the lungs are unable to rid the body of toxins during exhalation, because of the decrease of oxygen in the body, that the kidneys take over and work overtime. Once you are on XPAP, the lungs take over again, but I sure have a really full bladder in the a.m now, even though it doesn't feel like it.

Before I started my APAP, I was getting up 2 or 3 times a night. From the first night until now (a whole two weeks) I haven't had to get up! I'm amazed!

Oh heck! I've always had to get up at least once a night to piddle. But for many years before CPAP it was 3-4 times a night. Since CPAP its only once a night again and I"m averaging 7 1/2 hours of sleep a night. I do have to go first thing in the morning but its not an emergency, clear the way, here I come first thing in the morning like it used to be.

I wonder, tho, how much is psychological too. I'd volunteer at our local hospital for 4 hours and not have to "go", piddle before I left, drive the 1/2 hour home, as I turned off the highway unto my road the urge would hit, by the time I drove the mile to our driveway it was YUP, I DO gotta GO. By the time I parked the car it was Gangway! Here I come!

Now, since CPAP, the idea still occurs to me as I turn on our road, and becomes a definite urge by the time I pull in the driveway and a "lets go do our thing" when I park the car. But I can walk in the house and to the bathroom at a normal pace w/o holding my breath and praying or running over anyone or anything in my way!

Dr. Krakow's nocturia link

From the light bulb article above on Specific Conditions and OSA:

Urination, nighttime (nocturia)and OSA. If you have untreated sleep apnea, the body may secrete a hormone (atrial natriuretic factor) that increases your urine output during sleep. When sleep apnea is treated, nighttime urine output is reduced, and you may get through the night without a bathroom trip. TSJohnson, Sleep Apnea, p. 181

This is a must-read article for understanding the link between nocturia and OSA: http://www.nocturiacures.com/

If I pee at night, I try to remember to (1) turn the light on, (2) lift the seat, (3) pee, (4) put the seat back down, then (5) turn the light off.

If I forget any part of that procedure, or get the order wrong, I am likely to hear about it the next morning.

I say all that as a note to self, for the next time the spammers resurrect the thread. I can use all the reminders I can get. I'm not good with complicated procedures like that.

reserected thread or not, this is something I am noticing an improvement in during my first three weeks on cpap. Actually, I had two days early last week without my machine due to the humidifier not working right and it came back. Its gone again thank goodness. I am peeing less in the daytime too.
